Details The #1 Source for Hats Online Francois Boucher, Madam Bergeret Madame Bergeret is hoding her "Bergere" straw hat, also known as the "Shepherdess," "Milkmaid", or "Skimmer." They were often worn "gipsy" style, with a ribbon that tied under the chin encircling the head. Bergeres had long been worn in rural England; in August 1667 Samuel Pepys noted in his diary that the ladies in the country wore these straw hats, which "...did become them mightily." Straw had been used in hatmaking for centuries, the finest was Leghorn or Tuscan straw from Italy. The scarcity and expense of this straw caused local milliners to experiment with different native straws. Soon English and American women were making fine straw hats. It was a laborious process; the straw was first split, then plaited (braided) into sections which were then sewn together by hand, and blocked into shape.

    Francois Boucher
    Birth Year : 1703
    Death Year : 1770
    Country : France
Francois Boucher was born in Paris, the son of a lace designer who first taught him to draw. He studied with Francois Le Moyne for a short while in 1720, worked with an engraver for whom he drew book illustrations, and won the Prix de Rome in 1924. He did not leave for the usual four-year sojourn in Italy until 1727. In Italy, he studied the work of Northern Italian painters, especially those of the Venetian school led by Tiepolo . The greatest influences on Boucher's style were Le Moyne (who painted in the manner of Tiepolo ), the late Baroque and early Rococo Venetians, and Watteau , from whose paintings and drawings Boucher made engravings. After his return to Paris and his subsequent election to the Academy in 1734, Boucher moved almost exclusively in the world of the French Court, where he was first patronized by the Queen and then by Madame de Pompadour, whose friend, teacher, and protégé he remained. Boucher decorated many royal buildings and chateaux and in 1756, at the instigation of Madame de Pompadour, he received from King Louis XVI the important position of director of the Gobelins tapestry factory. Nine years later he was named "first painter to the King" and Director of the Royal Academy. Fragonard

    Boucher, François
Boucher, François (1703-1770), French painter, noted for his pastoral and mythological scenes, whose work embodies the frivolity and sensuousness of the rococo style. Boucher, the son of a designer of lace, was born in Paris. He studied with the painter François Le Moyne but was most influenced by the delicate style of his contemporary Antoine Watteau . In 1723 Boucher won the Prix de Rome; he studied in Rome from 1727 to 1731. After his return to France, he created hundreds of paintings, decorative boudoir panels, tapestry designs, theater designs, and book illustrations. He became a faculty member of the Royal Academy in 1734. He designed for the Beauvais tapestry works and in 1755 became director of the Gobelins tapestries. In 1765 he was made first painter to the king, director of the Royal Academy, and designer for the Royal Porcelain Works. His success was encouraged by his patron, Marquise de Pompadour, mistress to Louis XV. He painted her portrait several times. Boucher's delicate, lighthearted depictions of classical divinities and well-dressed French shepherdesses delighted the public, who considered him the most fashionable painter of his day. Examples of his work are the paintings Triumph of Venus (1740, Nationalmuseum, Stockholm) and

Born in Paris , the son of a lace designer Nicolas Boucher , Fran§ois Boucher was perhaps the most celebrated decorative artist of the 18th century, with most of his work reflecting the Rococo style. At the young age of 17, Boucher was apprenticed by his father to Fran§ois Lemoyne , however after only 3 months he went to work for the engraver Jean-Fran§ois Cars . Within 3 years Boucher had already won the elite Grand Prix de Rome , although he did not take up the consequential opportunity to study in Italy until 4 years later. His delicate, lighthearted depictions of classical divinities and unusually well-dressed French shepherdesses delighted the public, who made him the most fashionable painter of mid-century Europe. By the early 1770's, his sentimental and, some said, facile style was too widely imitated and fell out of favor during the rise of neoclassicism. He died in Paris on 30 May 1770. .
