    Francois Boucher
    Birth Year : 1703
    Death Year : 1770 Country : France Francois Boucher was born in Paris, the son of a lace designer who first taught him to draw. He studied with Francois Le Moyne for a short while in 1720, worked with an engraver for whom he drew book illustrations, and won the Prix de Rome in 1924. He did not leave for the usual four-year sojourn in Italy until 1727. In Italy, he studied the work of Northern Italian painters, especially those of the Venetian school led by Tiepolo . The greatest influences on Boucher's style were Le Moyne (who painted in the manner of Tiepolo ), the late Baroque and early Rococo Venetians, and Watteau , from whose paintings and drawings Boucher made engravings. After his return to Paris and his subsequent election to the Academy in 1734, Boucher moved almost exclusively in the world of the French Court, where he was first patronized by the Queen and then by Madame de Pompadour, whose friend, teacher, and protégé he remained. Boucher decorated many royal buildings and chateaux and in 1756, at the instigation of Madame de Pompadour, he received from King Louis XVI the important position of director of the Gobelins tapestry factory. Nine years later he was named "first painter to the King" and Director of the Royal Academy.

    French painter, engraver, and designer. He was probably trained by his father, a minor painter. In 1723 he won the Prix de Rome, but he was unable to travel to Italy until 1728. For his first major commission he produced 125 engravings of drawings by Antoine Watteau . He executed important decorative commissions for Madame de Pompadour at Versailles. His playful style and frivolous subject matter exemplify the Rococo style and embody the elegant superficiality of French court life in the mid 18th century. He became a member of the Royal Academy in 1734, a principal designer for the royal porcelain factories, and director of the Gobelins tapestry factory. In 1765 he was appointed director of the Royal Academy and first painter to Louis XV . One of the great painters and draftsmen of the 18th century, he mastered every branch of decorative and illustrative painting. document.writeln(AAMB2);

    Boucher Francois - January 1st 1970
    Francois Boucher, French Rococo painter, engraver, and designer. He was born on 29 September 1703 and died on 30 May 1770. Francois Boucher is stil considered an artist who represents best the frivolity and elegant superficiality of French court life at the middle of the 18th century, an artist who is the essence of Rococo. After studying for a short time under the guidance of Francois Lemoyne, he was very much influenced by Watteau, making a great number of engravings after the master's painting. He won the Prix de Rome and left in 1727 for Italy , where he would stay till 1731. He returned to France and began a very succesful carier as a decorative and fashionable artist. It seemed there was nothing he couldn't do, from interior decorations, paintings and tapistry designs to fashionable paintings, very much in demand among at the French Court . He became Director of the Gobelins factory in 1755 and Director of the Academy and King's Painter in 1765. He was also the favourite of Mme de Pompadour, to whom he gave lessons and whose portrait he painted several times. He managed to master literally evrey branch of decorative and illustrative painting, making among others the famous and colossal schemes of decoration for the royal chateaux of

    Biography:

    Son of an artist, Francois Boucher learned many techniques as a child before receiving his formal art education from Francois Lemoyne. His initial job was as an engraver, producing replicas of Watteau’s drawings. However, he also was a successful painter and one the Prix de Rome in 1723. He then studied throughout Italy and began receiving royal commissions and a position as court artist. Boucher also worked for high profile, Madame de Pompadour, creating portraits and decorating her palace. Because Boucher was primarily painting for others, his work was consistently focused on pleasant, mythological subject matters and scenic landscapes.

    Born: Paris, France, 1703 Died: Paris, France, 1770 At the age of 17 the young Boucher was apprenticed by his father, a designer of embroidery patterns, to François Lemoyne. However, after only 3 months, he went to work for the engraver Jean-François Cars. Within 3 years he had already won the Grand Prix de Rome, although he did not take up the ensuing opportunity to study in Italy until 4 years later. On his return in 1731, he was admitted to the Academy as a historical painter, becoming a member in 1734, then ever onwards and upwards in his brilliant career: from professor to Rector of the Academy, becoming head of the Royal Gobelin factory in 1755 and finally "Premier Peintre du Roi" (First Painter of the King) in 1765. Drawing on the influence of Watteau and Rubens, Boucher's early work celebrates the pastoral and idyllic, depicting nature and landscape with great finesse. However, the eroticism of his shepherds and shepherdesses show very little of the traditional rural innocence, and his mythological scenes are amorous and sensual rather than traditionally heroic. Boucher was the favourite painter of the Marquise de Pompadour (1721-1764), mistress of King Louis XV, whose name became synonymous with Rococo art, and it is in his portraits, particularly of her, that this style is clearly exemplified. Paintings such as "The Breakfast" of 1739 also show Boucher as a master of the genre scene in which he regularly used his own wife and family as models. However, such intimate family scenes are in contrast to the libertine style as seen in his "Odalisque" portraits, the dark-haired version of which prompted Diderot to claim that Boucher was "prostituting his own wife", and the "Blonde Odalisque" in which the extra-marital relationships of the King were evoked. Such private commissions for wealthy collectors gained Boucher his lasting notoriety and, after the censure of Diderot with his new morality, his final creative years his reputation came under increasing critical attack.

Once the initial awe at his virtuosity has abated, take the time to look for the artist's progressive development of structure, form and surface through mark-making in each image. FRANÇOIS BOUCHER
    Paris 1703 - 1770 Paris.
    The extraordinary career of Francois Boucher was unmatched by his contemporaries in versatility, consistency and output. For many, particularly the writers and collectors who led the revival of interest in the French rococo during the last century, his sensuous beauties, coquettish milkmaids and plump cupids represent the French eighteenth century at its most typical. His facility with the brush, even when betraying the occasional superficiality of his art, enabled him to master every aspect of painting - history and mythology, portraiture, landscape, ordinary life and, as part of larger compositions, even still life.
    He had been trained as an engraver, and the skills of a draftsman which he imbued in the studio of Jean-Francois Cars stood him in good stead throughout his career; his delightful drawings are one of the most sought after aspects of his oeuvre. As a student of Francois Le Moyne he mastered the art of composition - although in later years he was to deny his debt to Le Moyne - while the four years he spent in Italy, from 1727-1731, gave him the education in the works of the masters, in the classics and in history, that his modest upbringing had denied him.
    On his return to Paris, in 1734, he gained full membership of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture with his splendid Rinaldo and Armida (Paris, Musee de Louvre), a bold rococo statement which, while showing his awareness of the famous composition of Domenichino in the French Royal Collection, is marked nonetheless with the very distinct characteristics of his own, maturing style. Although he occasionally painted subjects taken from the Bible throughout his career, and would always have first considered himself to be a history painter, his own repertoire of heroines, seductresses, flirtatious peasant girls and erotic beauties was better suited to a lighter, more decorative subject matter.
