Sandro Botticelli
Botticelli's real name was Sandro Filipepi. Botticelli, which means "little barrels," was a nickname given to his rotund older brother that later spread to the whole family. Botticelli's father, a lowly tanner, worked hard to give his children a better chance in life. Young Sandro joined the workshop of Fra Filippo Lippi, a famous painter who had scandalized Florence by leaving his life as a monk to marry a former nun. Later, Botticelli was drawn to the teaching of Savonarola, a monk who accused Florentines of living immorally and exhorted them to burn their books, paintings and other luxuries in what he called a "bonfire of the vanities." Botticelli may have thought his own paintings were not pious enough. First his art became more religious, then he gave it up altogether, and lived out his last years in a monastery. info@birdcagepress.com

of Botticelli's Birth of Venus. The life and work of Sandro Botticelli were seldom mentioned for several centuries following the end of the Italian Renaissance . The name Sandra Botticelli is so well known today that it is surprising that his life and work merited so little attention for so long. Sandro Botticelli was born in 1445, and he began his artistic life working as an apprentice to a goldsmith. Life in Florence would have been stimulating for a young man like Sandro Botticelli, and his work was patronized by the powerful Medici banking family, Florentine churches, and even the papacy for whom he executed frescoes in the Sistine Chapel in Rome. An interest in his life and work was resurrected by the nineteenth century Pre-Raphaelites, a Victorian brotherhood of artists who turned away from the High Renaissance art epitomized by Raphael
Late in life, Sandro Botticelli destroyed many of his own works.

Buy this poster at Art.com Sandro Botticelli, born Alessandro di Mariano Filipepi. He was born in 1445 in the Ognissanti parish in Florence, where he was registered as Alessandro, the son of di Mariano dei Filipepi. One rather curious thing - his father was fifty years old, and his mother was forty - this was very old. This would pursue him through life, as Sandro Botticelli's health was always very fragile, and the doctors would opine that he was born too late to parents who were too old. Botticelli decided to become a painter. He served an apprenticeship with Fra Filippo Lippi, the best Florentine painter of that time and perfected his art with Andrea Verrocchio, who created the bust of Lucrezia Donati. By 1470, he developed a highly personal style characterized by elegant execution, a sense of melancholy, and a strong emphasis on line - this impressed so many people, that he was commissioned to paint the famous Allegory of Fortitude.

A Great Renaissance Artist: Sandro Botticelli
"If Botticelli were alive now he'd be working for Vogue," the famous actor, Peter Ustinov once remarked. This may be true but the beauty and delicate detail of the paintings of this great Renaissance artist will always be admired by critics and the public alike. The Primavera and The Birth of Venus which both hang in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence are probably his best known works of art. Sandro Botticelli, whose real name was Alessandro di Mariano Filipepi was born in Florence, a city dominated by Lorenzo de'Medici and the fanatical Savonarola, in 1445. Florence was the centre of Italian art and culture and Botticelli chose to live the whole of his life in this beautiful city.
The painter's parents were considered very old to have a child at that time, his father was 50 and his mother was 40. He was ill for most of his life and doctors attributed this to the advanced age of his parents but there were advantages for the son of elderly parents. He enjoyed a privileged existence as his father was, by this time, an accomplished craftsman, a tanner, who became friendly with Giovanni Rucellai, a very wealthy and important Florentine banker and politician. Botticelli's unusual nickname which means 'little barrels' was either the nickname of one of his brothers, Antonio, a goldsmith, or the nickname of the goldsmith to whom he was first apprenticed. The Tuscan word for goldbeater is battigello and Botticelli would have had to beat gold during his apprenticeship.

Biography of Sandro Botticelli
Birth Year : 1445
Death Year : 1510
Country : Italy
Sandro Botticelli was born in Florence. The most humanistic of the Renaissance painters, he was at first apprenticed to a goldsmith. He became, in 1465, a pupil of Fra Filippo Lippi 's, and remained with him for about two years. It is believed that he later worked with Verrocchio and with the Pollaiuolo brothers, from whom he learned precise drawing. Some time around 1474, Botticelli became the favored painter of the Medici and their intellectual circle. Like them, the artist subscribed to Neoplatonism: an esoteric philosophical and literary theory blending paganism into Christianity and professing a spiritual union with God. It was for the Medici that Botticelli painted fresco panels (now lost), many portraits, and his two most famous works, "Spring" and "The Birth of Venus". His paintings are sensitively beautiful in soft tender colors, graceful, harmonious, and glowing in line. They are expressive of an intellectual and moral questioning, a humanistic spirit and a melancholy personal poetry.
In Botticelli's next period, which began in the mid-1480's, he painted his section of the frescoes of the Sistine Chapel. The composition here is more solid and monumental. Lorenzo de'Medici died in 1492, and his successors were forced to leave Florence when the fanatical preacher Savonarola, who was eventually burned at the stake, attacked the "pagan" cult of the Medici. As a result, Botticelli, who became one of Savonarola's followers, is said to have destroyed several of his own works. He continued to paint austere works indicative of intensive emotions and concerned with religious rather than secular subjects, but with little change in his style. After Savonarola's death in 1498, Botticelli, poor and ill, painted very little. He died in 1510.

Introduction
This sonnet is the textual focus point for DGR's deep admiration for Botticelli's work. Its visual counterparts are various paintings, especially La Pia de' Tolomei La Ghirlandata , and especially La Donna Della Finestra . All of these pictures reflect, and reflect upon, the Botticelli picture that DGR bought in 1867 at Christie's for twenty pounds, the Portrait of Smerelda Bandinelli (now in the Victoria and Albert Museum). It is now generally ascribed to the school of Botticelli and not to the master himself.
