Steve Grant (USA) Sandro Botticelli, whose real name was Alessandro di Mariano Filipepi, was one of the leading painters of the Florentine Renaissance. He developed a highly personal style characterized by elegant execution, a sense of melancholy, and a strong emphasis on line; details in his paintings appear as sumptuous still lifes. Botticelli was born in Florence, the son of a tanner. The name ("little barrel") by which he became known was either the nickname of his elder brother or the name of the goldsmith to whom he was first apprenticed. Later he was apprenticed to Fra Filippo Lippi. He worked with the painter and engraver Antonio del Pollaiuolo, from whom he gained his sense of line, and came under the influence of Andrea del Verrocchio. By 1470, Botticelli had his own workshop. He spent almost all of his life working for the great Florentine families, especially the Medici family, for whom he painted portraits, most notably the Giuliano de' Medici (1475-1476, National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.). Adoration of the Magi (1476-1477, Uffizi, Florence) was painted on commission (though not for the Medicis), and contains likenesses of the Medici family.

One of the most intriguing things about Boticelli was that he took part in the Bonfire of the Vanities, which was the burning in 1497 of objects that were deemed evil by the Dominican priest Savonarola.  Botticelli even  burned some of his own paintings because their subjects were pagan.  Fortunately two such paintings, The Birth of Venus   and  Primavera , survived.      The Wikipedia entry on Botticelli has images of some of his paintings and much more information.  Apparently Botticelli is also the name of a guessing game One of my favorite blogs, The Third Eve , contains a detail from The Birth of Venus in its heading. • Eve ... October 19, 2007 at 9:42 pm I like Boticelli, too. I keep meaning to analyze his painting because it has so many archetypal meanings and traditional medieval symbols (even though he was Renaissance, I think he borrowed several significant symbols for Birth of Venus). Botticelli, Sandro (1444?-1510) Renowned for his linear finesse and richly colored, meticulous paintings, Botticelli produced profound religious works, astute portraits, and poetic adaptations of classical mythology. According to Charles Dempsey, his characters "approximate to a quasi-courtly ideal of antique grace clothed in the garments of the Florentine present." An air of innocent intimacy and sensual beauty infuses his work, encouraging a suggestively queer response. Born Alessandro di Mariano Filipepi in 1444 or 1445, Botticelli, the son of a tanner, may have trained as a goldsmith before apprenticing with the great Florentine artist Filippo Lippi. By 1470, he was an independent master, increasingly attracting patronage from a prestigious circle, including men from both branches of the Medici family. Sponsor Message.

Madonna and child with an angel by Botticelli, 1465 - 1467
So just what Dante scorns as unworthy alike of heaven and hell, Botticelli accepts, that middle world in which men take no side in great conflicts, and decide no great causes, and make great refusals. He thus sets for himself the limits within which art, undisturbed by any moral ambition, does its most sincere and surest work. His interest is neither in the untempered goodness of Angelico's saints, nor the untempered evil of Orcagna's Inferno; but with men and women, in their mixed and uncertain condition, always attractive, clothed sometimes by passion with a character of loveliness and energy, but saddened perpetually by the shadow upon them of the great things from which they shrink. His morality is all sympathy; and it is this sympathy, conveying into his work somewhat more than is usual of the true complexion of humanity, which makes him, visionary as he is, so forcible a realist.

But it seems strange that he should have lived on inactive so long; and one almost wishes that some document might come to light, which, fixing the date of his death earlier, might relieve one, in thinking of him, of his dejected old age. [51/52] He is before all things a poetical painter, blending the charm of story and sentiment, the medium of the art of poetry, with the charm of line and colour, the medium of abstract painting. So he becomes the illustrator of Dante. In a few rare examples of the edition of 1481, the blank spaces, left at the beginning of every canto for the hand of the illuminator, have been filled, as far as the nineteenth canto of the Inferno, with impressions of engraved plates, seemingly by way of experiment, for in the copy in the Bodleian Library, one of the three impressions it contains has been printed upside down, and much awry, in the midst of the luxurious printed page.
