Biography
He received his stamp of approval at 10 am on January 28, 1475; the bells of Santa Croce were all pealing wildly, because, as it happened every five years, the Medicis were offering Florence a joust - this was still done during the High Renaissance. Giuliano de' Medici was this joust's hero, with his armor, shield, sword, plumes - it was grandiose and Florence remembered it with emotion. But, and this was the most important, the hero's emblem floated at the end of a pole: his banner was fabulous and had been painted by Sandro Botticelli. This work, borne by Florence's master, transformed Botticelli not only into the protégé of the gods, but also the protégé of princes. Botticelli's great career began soon after. To summarize this great career, we are going to look at two commissions - one profane: two frescoes in the Lemmi Villa, and the other sacred: those in the Sistine Chapel, which are little-known Botticelli works.
Analysis: The Birth of Venus
Here are several details to make us aware of Venus' triumphant splendor. We know that until recently, this Birth of Venus had been lavishly covered with varnish, which means that the successive coats of varnish had finally completely opacified. The two paintings were superbly cleaned, and we have now discovered a new Botticelli: pearly flesh, nearly translucent, skin so fine that we have the impression that we can almost see the sea through it. All of the marvelous qualities of Botticelli's painting only appeared after it had been cleaned.

Botticelli, Sandro
T IMELINE The Early Renaissance Original name ALESSANDRO DI MARIANO FILIPEPI (b. 1445, Florence [Italy]d. May 17, 1510, Florence), Florentine early Renaissance painter whose Birth of Venus (c. 1485) and Primavera (1477-78) are often said to epitomize for modern viewers the spirit of the Renaissance. His ecclesiastical commissions included work for all the major churches of Florence and for the Sistine Chapel in Rome. His name is derived from his elder brother Giovanni, a pawnbroker, who was called Il Botticello ("The Little Barrel").
Encyclopaedia Britannica
Although he was one of the most individual painters of the Italian Renaissance, Sandro Botticelli remained little known for centuries after his death. Then his work was rediscovered late in the 19th century by a group of artists in England known as the Pre-Raphaelites. Born Alessandro di Mariano Filipepi in Florence in 1445, Botticelli was apprenticed to a goldsmith. Later he was a pupil of the painter Fra Filippo Lippi. He spent all his life in Florence except for a visit to Rome in 1481-82. There he painted wall frescoes in the Sistine Chapel of the Vatican. In Florence, Botticelli was a protege of several members of the powerful Medici family. He painted portraits of the family and many religious pictures, including the famous

    Sandro Botticelli (
Renaissance Botticelli, a Florentine painter, was one of the most distinctive and popular of Renaissance artists. Apprenticed to Filippo Lippi, he developed a highly personalized style taking Filippo Lippi's linear approach to new heights of gracefulness. His work was elegantly executed with a rich language of sometimes highly personal and melancholy gesture. By 1480 Botticelli had is own workshop with assistants. He spent almost all of his life working for the great families of Florence, especially the Medici family, for whom he painted portraits, most notably the Giuliano de' Medici. Adoration of the Magi was painted on commission (though not for the Medicis), and contains likenesses of the Medici family. His ideal of feminine beauty is shown in his mythological paintings for the Medici - most notably in his most famous painting, The Birth Of Venus (1482-84). The classical Goddess Venus is emerging from the water on a shell, held up by the Zephyrs, symbols of spiritual passions. The naked goddess isn't then a symbol of earthly but of spiritual love, like an ancient marble statue, slim and long-limbed, with harmonious features.

After a time, Sandro convinced his father that he wanted to study painting and was chosen to be apprentice to the well known painter Fra Filippo Lippi. Lippi was well known for how he used color on church altarpieces and helped Sandro discover a similar style for his own work. Sandro Botticelli developed tender expressions in his subjects face and in their gestures. He also used decorative details that were influenced by his training. Botticelli quickly became recognized as a gifted artist all by himself. By the time he was 15 years old, he was able to open a workshop dedicated to his own work. In 1481, Botticelli was invited to Rome to take part in the painting of the Sistine Chapel. Sandro joined artists such as Perugino, Ghirlandaio and then Michelangelo in contributing to the most well known piece of Italian art. While there, Botticelli worked on several pieces in the Chapel. In all, Botticelli painted three large pieces, as well as seven papal portraits in the Sistine Chapel. Even though Sandro was trying to keep up his status as a painter, he was still recognized with the honor to be part of the committee that chose the spot where Michelangelo would place his statue

Alessandro (Sandro) Botticelli was born in Florence in 1444 or 1445, the fourth son of Mariano di Vanni Filipepi, a tanner. Alessandro's nickname was derived from the one given to his eldest brother Giovanni, who, because of his corpulence, was called "Il Botticello" (little barrel). It is believed that Botticelli was apprenticed as a goldsmith before being sent, probably in the beginning of the 1460s, to Fra Filippo Lippi in order to study painting.
Since 1470, Botticelli ran his own workshop in Florence and, in 1472, he became a member of the St. Luke's Guild. His early woks were mostly small religious pieces. In 1470, he was commissioned... Italian painter. Botticelli was Florentine and extremely successful at the peak of his career, with a highly individual and graceful style founded on the rhythmic capabilities of outline. With the emergence of the High Renaissance style at the turn of the 16th century, he fell out of fashion, died in obscurity and was only returned to his position as one of the best-loved quattrocento painters through the interest of Ruskin and the Pre-Raphaelites.
His nickname "Botticelli" means "little barrel" and was originally bestowed on his older brother. For some reason the name was passed on to, and adopted by, the younger painter brother.
"Botticelli's early years are obscure, but he seems to have been trained in the studio of Filippo Lippi whose style informs his earliest dated work, the Fortitude panel (1470, Florence, Uffizi). This was commissioned to be one of a series of seven, the others having been executed by Piero Pollaiuolo.

Glancing at the list of titles of early Renaissance painter Sandro Botticelli's works, one might recognize by name alone two of artist's most beloved masterpieces. They are the Birth of Venus and the Primavera . And it is interesting to note that both of these stunning paintings have as their subject Venus, the Classical goddess of love and beauty. Indeed, Botticelli's Birth of Venus is perhaps one of the most celebrated and famous depictions of this alluring ancient goddess. One of the main themes of the Italian Renaissance - and remember, renaissance is a rebirth - was the rediscovery of the myths, legends, and art of the Classical world. Artist Sandro Botticelli contributed to this artistic rediscovery with his own interpretations of ancient Greek and Roman mythology. In paintings such as the aforementioned Birth of Venus and Primavera , as well as other images such as Pallas and the Centaur and Venus and Mars , Botticelli created appealing works that were partly based on myth and partly inspired by contemporary poetry and literature. This fusion of ancient and contemporary influences is one of the intriguing characteristics of Renaissance art in general and Botticelli's art in particular.

Sandro Botticelli Biography:
  • Sandro Botticelli was born in Italy in 1444. He was one of Florence's favorite artists. Botticelli's real name was Alessandro Filipepi. He became known as Botticelli when he went to live with his older brother, Botticello. He died in the year 15 19. He died a lonely man having done little or no more painting in the last ten years. It was not until over 350 years after his death that the world recognized his importance in art.
Interesting Facts:
  • He was known for his religious pictures but his most famous works were paintings of mythological creatures and gods from ancient Greek and Roman stories. He was more interested in making his paintings beautiful in a fantasy kind of way. He used his paint brush like a pen or a pencil to outline, or add lines around the people in his painting. His line work help give a feeling of movement to his painting.
Famous Works: Botticelli's most famous painting was " Primavera ." In this painting the people represent the wonderful things that happen in spring time. He placed Venus, the Goddess of Love, right in the middle of this picture and cupid is above her head. The lady in the pretty dress with flowers could be Springtime herself. The west wind flying through the air is blowing warm breezes. The other people are the nymphs and gods that help make spring such a wonderful time of the year. Personal Thoughts: "I don't like Botticelli 's paintings because he doesn't draw or paint real good because it is not realistic enough."

Sandro Botticelli
Artist Italy: Florence One of the finest painters of the Italian Renaissance, Botticelli produced works of extraordinary harmony and beauty. His "Birth of Venus" is among the most famous paintings in history, and for many epitomizes Renaissance art. Sandro Botticelli was particularly fond of religious subjects and did several of saints and quite a few of the Madonna. He also enjoyed literary topics, and painted a series based on Dante's Divine Comedy. He was frequently sponsored by the Medici family, including Lorenzo the Magnificent . He also worked on the Sistine chapel, where he painted, among other works, the Temptation of Christ. Later in his career, Botticelli experienced a crisis of religion when Savonarola took over Florence, preaching reform in his fire-and-brimstone speeches. His work then took on an even more deeply religious character.
