    Bosch, Hieronymus
Bosch, Hieronymus, or Jerom Bos u key Garden of Earthly Delights (Prado) appear to be intricate allegories; their symbolism, however, is obscure and has consistently defied unified interpretation. Bosch clearly had an interest in the grotesque, the diabolical, the exuberant, and the macabre. He also may have been the first European painter to depict scenes of everyday life, although often with a strong element of the bizarre. King Philip II of Spain collected some of his finest creations. The

The religious paintings of Hieronymus Bosch
The art of Heironymous Bosch, the mysterious dutch religious artist of the late middle ages.
Little is known of Hieronymus Bosch, one of the most mysterious western artists in modern history. It is known that he was a dutchman, born near the belgian border, and that he came from a family of artists. His family was also fairly rich, and Bosch, whose real name was Jerome van Aken, married into an even richer one. None of Bosch's works are either dated or named, but he was painting in the same era as Italian masters like Da Vinci and Michaelangelo, twenty years either side of the end of the 15th century, although his work bears little or no relation to theirs and it is debatable whether or not he was aware of their emergence. The period in which Bosch worked was important because of the changing attitude toward the church in Europe. Protestantism was developing under Martin Luther near the end of Bosch's life, but the disenfranchisement which fuelled it was prevalent for a long time before Luther's emergence. It was in this time of religious unrest that Bosch, a very religious man who according to a number of sources joined a group known as the Brotherhood of our Lady, painted, and his doctrinaire belief in the religion is reflected in the very medieval nature of his paintings on religious topics. However they also reflect a resentment of the church, with church figures frequently presented as corrupt and almost diseased.

Who does not love Hieronymus Bosch? I sure do. Do you know what his name means? It means "holy name", you may be more familiar with it as 'Jerome'. What a fantastic doodler he was. Here's a little image of some altar piece doors, showing his idea of how one gets to the afterlife - through a tunnel with the help of an angel apparently. There have been many words written about Bosch's supposed membership of the heretical "Bretheren of the Free Spirit", but then others say that he was not a member at all. If you want to see Bosch paintings close up, the Prado in Spain is the art gallery to go to. Posted by Caroline Tully at 12:52 AM

An exact chronology of Bosch's surviving work is difficult because, of the approximately 35 to 40 paintings attributed to him, only 7 are signed and none are dated. There exists little documentary information on the early life of the artist, other than the fact that he was the son and grandson of accomplished painters. His name does appear on the register of the Brotherhood of Our Lady, located in the city of his birth, and there is mention of him in official records from 1486 until the year of his death, when he was acclaimed an Insignis pictor ("distinguished painter"). In addition to painting he undertook decorative works and altarpieces and executed designs for stained glass. Works attributed to his youthful period show an awkwardness in drawing and composition and brushwork somewhat limited in its scope. Such paintings as "The Cure of Folly," "Crucifixion," "The Adoration

Bizaar but Fun Children's Book
Most of my recreational reading falls into the crime and mystery fiction areas. It might seem a stretch at first, but there is a connection between this book and those genres. I was driving back from Florida and thinking about Michael Connelly and his series character, LAPD Detective Harry Bosch. Harry is short for Hieronymus. Connelly had the 15th Century Netherlands painter in mind when he named his character. Bosch’s paintings are bizarre, disorienting, and sometimes hellish and Connelly puts Harry Bosch into that sort of landscape. This led me to think of this book. If you are not familiar with the works of Hieronymus Bosch, take a look at the Wikipedia article or just do a Google search. In this wonderfully illustrated children’s book, Nancy Willard wondered what it would be like to live in a household filled with Bosch’s imaginary characters. His cook finds it impossible to live in a house with three-legged thistles, pickle-winged fish, a beehive in boots, pigeon-toed rats, two-headed bats and many other equally bazaar creatures. Bosch, oblivious to her distress paints away and making off-the-wall remarks that rhyme with his last name.

Image, Symbol, and Music in the Art of Hieronymus Bosch
Brief Biography Hieronymus Bosch (c1450-1516) was one of the late great medieval Dutch painters. Very little is known of his life, religious beliefs, or philosophy, but he is most well known for his painting of fantastic images and for his concentration of medieval symbols. Many scholars have tried to interpret the images and symbols in his paintings, but these interpretations often disagree with one another, resulting in speculations that are often contradictory. Thus, these images and symbols continue to fascinate and puzzle us today as the search for their meaning continues. Jeroen Anthoniszoon van Aken (Bosch's orginal name) was born in 's Hertogenbosch in present-day Holland, near the Belgium border around 1450. It is assumed that his name "jheronymus" was chosen due to the family fondness for the patron Saint Hieronymous (St Jerome). Apparently, he used his town's name Bosch to identify and distinguish himself from the rest of his family. Joen or Jeroen (his more familiar names) was born as the fourth child of five into a family of painters in the Dutch tradition, and thus probably learned his technique from his father, Antonius van Aken, who was a professional painter. The Aken family came from Aachen in Germany; from which came their surname. 's Hertogenbosch is a small provincial town far from the centers of culture; so, it seems unusual that such a great artist lived and worked there. As an adult he became a church cleric and a lay member of the

Rotterdam, , NL Netherlands
The Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is proud to present the most important exhibition ever devoted to this late-Medieval painter from the Netherlands. On view in Rotterdam are eighteen panels attributed to Hieronymus Bosch, including incomparable masterpieces such as The Ship of Fools (Musée du Louvre, Paris), The Death of a Miser (National Gallery of Art, Washington) and Saint John the Baptist (Fundacion Lazaro-Galdiano, Madrid). Together with seven undisputed authentic drawings, they form the core of the exhibition. In addition, the exhibition encompasses a multitude of paintings from Bosch's workshop and his contemporaries. The continued fascination for Bosch's work is illustrated by the modern and contemporary works included in the exhibition by artists such as Bill Viola, Salvador Dalí, Jörg Immendorff, Robert Gober, Pipilotti Rist, William Kentridge and James Ensor. Rotterdam is the only venue for this exhibition, offering a unique opportunity to see so many works by Bosch together. This show is one of the highlights of Rotterdam 2001, Cultural Capital of Europe. Together with seven undisputed authentic drawings, they form the core of the exhibition.
