HIERONYMUS BOSCH: THE DELIGHTS OF HELL Wednesday 3 May 2006 midnight-1am Fascinating documentary exploring the life and work of the 15th-century painter whose imaginative depiction of hell and earthly pleasures have made him one of the world's best-loved artists. Director Interview BBC Four: What inspired you to make a film about Bosch? Adrian Maben: We timed the film to coincide with a big retrospective of Bosch's paintings at Rotterdam in 2001. Instead of having to film the paintings in the four corners of the world they all came to us, apart from the big triptychs which couldn't travel. BBC Four: The film, isn't just about Bosch, it's also about the problems inherent in sending pictures across the world... AM: Art films generally focus on pictures on a wall, you never see how they get there. I thought it would be interesting if we could follow the paintings from the original museum to Rotterdam. It takes an enormous amount of planning on the part of the curators and is expensive because they have to ensure that paintings don't get damaged on the way. There have to be all kinds of condition reports, because the curators are afraid that they may get their pride and joy back in a harmed state. BBC Four: Little is known of Bosch's life, but in the programme you look at the possible influence of carnival spirit on his work. Do you think this was one of his main inspirations?

Hieronymus Bosch spent much of his life in the Dutch town of s'Hertogenbosch, after which he was named. This town was outside the mainstream of Dutch Art of this time, which lends credence to the belief that Bosch led a very secluded life. Few facts exist concerning other aspects of his life except that it is known he married one of the wealthiest heiresses in the Netherlands and died at the age of sixty in 1516. Bosch's art contains images that draw from religious symbolism, fantasy, nightmare and folk legend. The roots of modern movements, particularly Surrealism can be seen in his many involved and complicated works. The fact that none of his paintings, of which about forty survive, is dated, makes it very difficult to trace his artistic development and add to the mystery that surrounds him as an artist. It is however, through his art, that we must learn about the man. His pictures follow a regular form clearly illustrating the tensions of the times. Bosch was quite obsessed with portraying the sins of men and his vision of the punishments for and consequences of such actions. In The Garden of Earthly Delights we see mankind being tempted to indulge in excessive behaviours and the resultant punishment with Bosch's own vision of hell. It is indeed a nightmare with bird-like creatures devouring sinners and digesting them into a pitch black pit where they are condemned to serve the darker forces.

Executive summary: Painter of the grotesque Jerom Bosch is the name generally given, from his birthplace Hertogenbosch, to Hieronymus van Aeken, the Dutch painter. He was probably a pupil of Albert Ouwater, and may be called the Breughel of the 15th century, for he devoted himself to the invention of bizarre types, diableries , and scenes of the kind generally associated with Breughel, whose art is to a great extent based on Bosch's. He was a satirist much in advance of his time, and one of the most original and ingenious artists of the 15th century. He exercised great influence on Lucas Cranach, who frequently copied his paintings. His works were much admired in Spain, especially by Philip II., at whose court Bosch painted for some time. One of his chief works is the "Last Judgment" at the Berlin gallery, which also owns a little "St. Jerome in the Desert." "The Fall of the Rebellious Angels" and the "St. Anthony" triptych are in the Brussels museum, and two important triptychs are at the Munich gallery. The Lippmann collection in Berlin contains an important "Adoration of the Magi", the Antwerp museum a "Passion", and a practically unknown painting from his brush is at the Naples museum.

The Garden of Earthly Delight was painted by Hieronymus Bosch around 1504. It consists of four parts:
The Garden (cover) is from the shutters which cover the triptych and depicts the third day of creation. The Garden (right) is the right wing of the triptych and depicts Hell. It is probably one of his most memorable images. The Garden (middle) is the middle wing of the triptych and depicts "Ecclesia's Paradise." The Garden (left) is the left wing of the triptych and depicts "The Earthly Paradise."
The Temptation of St. Anthony was painted around 1510 by Hieronymus Bosch. This tryptych describes the ordeals of St. Anthony. Note that in the 16th century, temptation not only had the meaning it has today, but also meant physical and mental assault by demons. So St. Anthony is not only tempted by the pleasures of the flesh, etc., but he is also beaten up and terrorized by the demons. Here are the other two panels: Right and Left side.

    Biography:

Jerome Van Aken was born in Hertogenbosch in North Brabant, where he lived his entire life. He went by a shortened Latin version of his name, Hieronymus Bosch. His large oil paintings were allegorical and mystical works filled with both religious and mythological symbolism. His work later influenced the Surrealists. There have also been attempts to analyze his paintings in Jungian and Freudian terms, as it is thought that they were replications of Bosch’s nightmares.

    *WHAT THEY SOUND LIKE*
Heralded as musical historians by Steve O'Rourke, The Bosch claims The Pixies and Frank Black, Camper Van Beethoven and Cracker, the Ventures, Link Wray, Man... or Astroman?, and The Gun Club as significant influences. In other words, it's a furious and melodic mixture of surf, garage, and punk rock.
    *PERSONNEL*
THE BOSCH, smarmy surf rockers extraordinaire, claim the two most prominent Williamsburgs as their home. Originally hailing from Williamsburg, Virginia, erudite and visionary guitarist MATT HARRISON and super-charged sociopath HOLT RICHARDSON met in their tedious years at a tiny white-bread private high school. After they developed a disturbingly telepathic musical rapport, they began a professional affair with the Sound of Music in Richmond, Virginia, and more specifically, with engineer Jonathan Demaio, who, when not touring with Southern Culture on the Skids and other top-notch Southern bands, has cut "The Bosch Sound" onto analog tape on many occasions.

6,200 Words. Dark-varnished planks of wood made up the floor. The ceiling was painted with an elaborately twining squash vine adorned with birds and beasties peeping from behind each flower and leaf. Counters and cupboards lined the walls, with a sturdy wooden table beside a window. The red-cheeked young maid sprang to her feet, ran back towards the hearth and snatched up a long, skinny boning knife. Aleid, too, hastened to the far side of the room and turned, watching for a move from the strangers. But the feat of strength only frightened the women. The fact that Jayjay and Thuy could move six times as fast as the Hibraners made them rather uncanny. Aleid found a knife of her own. Kathelijn crouched and pointed hers at Jayjay. He clattered the chair to the floor and backed away. Aleid nodded, and the maid gave each of them a raw June carrot, crunchy and sweet. A cluttered work table sat in the middle of the studio, and beyond that was Jeroen Bosch, standing before the window, brush in hand, the light falling over his shoulder onto a large, square oak panel. Bosch tightened his lips, clearly doubting this.
