Hieronymus Bosch Latinised Jheronimus Bosch ; real name Jeroen van Aken ) (c. August 9 ) was an Early Netherlandish painter of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Many of his works depict sin and human moral failings. Bosch used images of demons , half-human animals and machines to evoke fear and confusion to portray the evil of man. The works contain complex, highly original, imaginative, and dense use of symbolic figures and iconography , some of which was obscure even in his own time.

Interesting Hieronymus Bosch's use of symbolism does not diverge much from other Medieval artists. He illustrates malicious demons cavorting about whilst engaging in immoral behavior. I wonder how the church reacted to this work? One wants to look away but finds himself pulled into the erotic imagery. Bosch' s art is exceptional for the distinctive and complex nightmarish world he rendered with such incredible skill.
Hieronymus Bosch is rare in that he depicted his revelations and prophecies for the world to see. I believe his work has survived for a reason. Bosch's phantasmagoric images of rapture and torment have a extraordinary importance in the 21st century. As an artist he exhibited a vision that was grim, immeasurable in scope and divine.
Hieronymus's paintings are an intricate and rich matrix of both mystery and discovery. His work is "internally" directed and can only be described as 'fantastic' and 'visionary'. Some figures are carefully rendered; others evolve more playfully and seem thrown into the composition. I have 5 Hieronymus Bosch prints and have found that they change each time I look at them.

"The Garden of Earthly Delights" by Hieronymus Bosch Hieronymus Bosch was born in 1450 in Flanders. Though the meaning of his paintings is now largely incomprehensible, they were certainly constructed as allegories and social commentaries. In these Pre-Reformation times there was a great deal of public hysteria against heresy, sorcery, and magic. Public tortures and executions were common. Hieronymus Bosch's work might have easily been viewed with suspicion, but his marriage into wealth shielded him from such concerns—In 1478 he married Aleyt van de Meervenne, (Anna van Meer, in our musical) the daughter of a wealthy patrician. Hieronymus Bosch later joined the Brethren of the Swan, a charitable group for whom he did some work on their altarpiece. They also put on morality plays. One of them, "The Temptation of St. Anthony", which Hieronymus Bosch certainly had a hand in, was criticized by a young scholar, Erasmus of Rotterdam, for being licentious and heretical. That is how Erasmus became the villain of the musical "Hieronymus". To learn more about the Hieronymus Bosch musical by T. E. Breitenbach, click here

(El Jardin de las Delicias)
Painted: 1500.
ORIGINAL SIZE: 81.1" X 151.9" An exceptional trilogy, a prodigy in myths and mundane traditions with imagination, plagued with a climate of fantasies that seem inexhaustible. It is a painting that has successive situations that beg the onlookers´ contemplations.

Click on the image to enlarge The Garden of Earthly Delights - Paradise
(El Jardin de las Delicias - El Paraiso) The first section of the triptych piece known as the Garden of Earthly Delights, seems to depict the garden of Eden with Adam and Eve, before the eating from the tree of knowledge, since neither Adam nor Eve are hiding from what seems to represent God. Curiousity: at the centre right of this section, is a mound of dirt that when looked at closely seems to be a face of a moustached man, what's curious is that this type of image was accredited to a great painter centuries later, Dali. The Garden of Earthly Delights - Central Panel
(El Jardin de las Delicias - El Madroño) The centre piece of this Bosch triptych depicts many activities among women and men. In the middle ages it was popular belief that debauchery was the mother of all sins and that it was from it that all other sins would then follow . It was also believed that the source of this temptation and sin came from women. Following the example of Eve who influenced Adam, it was believed that women could not help themselves, that was the way they were.

Hieronymus Bosch
Hieronymus Bosch (1450-1516), one of the most famous of 16th-century Flemish artists, was known for his large, enigmatic panels illustrating complex religious subjects with fantastic, demonic imagery. The documents about Bosch indicate that he followed the predictable life of a prominent Roman Catholic artist in 's Hertogenbosch, a provincial but prosperous town located in the modern Netherlands close to the Belgian border. His father and grandfather were both painters in the same town before him and apparently Bosch lived all his life there. He married a local woman and joined the lay organisation of the Confraternity of Notre Dame. Bosch was responsible for designing a stained-glass window, among several other works, for the town church. His art was well known outside 's Hertogenbosch during his own lifetime. Philip the Fair ordered a large panel, “The Last Judgment” (location unknown), from him in 1504 and Margaret of Austria (1480-1530) owned “The Temptation of Saint Anthony” (location unknown) by him in 1516. References to astrology, folklore, witchcraft, and alchemy, in addition to the theme of the Antichrist and episodes from the lives of exemplary saints, are all woven together by Bosch into a labyrinth of late medieval Christian iconography. Scholars differ in their interpretation of Bosch's art, but most agree that his pictures show a preoccupation with the human propensity for sin in defiance of God, as well as with God's eternal damnation of lost souls in hell as a fateful consequence of human folly. Stylistically, Bosch worked in a manner called “alla prima”, a method of applying paint freely on a preliminary ground of brownish paint. He was familiar with Dutch manuscript paintings and with foreign prints, and many of his images can be traced to these sources.

Timeline: Late Gothic Painting The master of the monstrous... the discoverer of the unconscious.
Carl Gustav Jung, on Hieronymus Bosch Hieronymus, or Jerome, Bosch , b. c.1450, d. August 1516, spent his entire artistic career in the small Dutch town of Hertogenbosch, from which he derived his name. At the time of his death, Bosch was internationally celebrated as an eccentric painter of religious visions who dealt in particular with the torments of hell. During his lifetime Bosch's works were in the inventories of noble families of the Netherlands, Austria, and Spain, and they were imitated in a number of paintings and prints throughout the 16th century, especially in the works of Pieter Bruegel the Elder Bosch was a member of the religious Brotherhood of Our Lady, for whom he painted several altarpieces for the Cathedral of Saint John's, Hertogenbosch, all of which are now lost. The artist probably never went far from home, although records exist of a commission in 1504 from Philip the Handsome (later king of Castile), for a lost Last Judgment altarpiece. None of Bosch's pictures are dated, although the artist signed many of them. The Extraction of the Stone of Madness (The Cure of Folly)

Bosch’s pictures have always fascinated viewers, but in earlier centuries it was widely assumed that his diabolic scenes were intended merely to amuse or titillate, most people regarded him as “the inventor of monsters and chimeras’.
Philip II, though, collected his works more for education than for entertainment. A Dutch art historian in the early 17th century described Bosch’s paintings chiefly as ‘wondrous and strange fantasies… often less pleasant than gruesome to look at’. In the 20th century, however, scholars decided that Bosch’s art has a more profound significance, and there have been many attempts to explain its origins and meaning. Some writers saw him as a sort of 15th century surrealist and linked his name with that of Salvator Dali. For others, Bosch’s art reflects mysterious practices of the Middle Ages. No matter what explanation and comprehension of his art might be, Bosch remains the most extravagant painter of his time. Continued...
