Rosa Bonheur (1822-1899)
Born in Bordeaux, Rosa Bonheur received her training from her father who was a minor landscape painter. In 1829, she moved with her family to Paris. While unconventional in her ambitions and personal conduct, Bonheur was traditional in her working method. She studied her subjects carefully and produced many preparatory sketches before she applied paint to canvas. Bonheur's reputation grew steadily in the 1840s; she regularly exhibited her animal paintings and sculptures at the Paris Salon, from 1841 to 1853. The Salon favored traditional work, and most artists sought to exhibit at the annual shows, as it was the primary way for their work to be publicly seen.
The government of the Second Republic awarded Bonheur a commission. The resulting painting, Plowing in Nivernais (Musée Nationale du Château de Fontainebleau), exhibited at the Salon of 1849, firmly established the artist's career. In 1853, she won international acclaim with her monumental painting The Horse Fair (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York), which was exhibited in England and which Queen Victoria greatly admired.
Rosa Bonheur was the most famous woman artist of the first three quarters of the nineteenth century. Although many women at this time were amateur artists, it was very unusual for a woman to pursue painting as a serious career. Also unusual was her family’s support in that endeavor. From age ten on, Bonheur spent hours sketching animals in parks on the outskirts of Paris; by age seventeen, she was contributing to the family income by making copies of paintings in the Louvre. Since it was not possible for a woman to attend the official schools of art at this time (that right was not granted until 1897), her father served as her instructor.

A life painting animals: Rosa Bonheur's love of animals went hand in hand with her love of art.
Highlights for Children July, 2003 by Childress, Diana Content provided
in partnership with "Moo!" "Baa!" Animal sounds filled the air as drovers prodded the cattle and sheep into town. The September livestock market was underway. All at once, unnerved by the throngs of people, the oxen lowered their long horns and charged. Screaming onlookers ran for cover. But Rosa Bonheur stood her ground. She opened up her sketchbook and began to draw. Rosa Bonheur never feared animals. As a small child in the south of France in the 1820s, she terrified her parents by running into pastures to admire the bulls. When she grew up, she kept lions as pets.

From age 10 she spent time sketching animals in the parks surrounding Paris and Raimond also allowed her to keep a variety of pets including a pet sheep, which she housed on the balcony of the family’s 6 th floor apartment. By age 17 she was earning money to help supplement the family income by making copies of paintings in the Louvre. In particular she was strongly influenced by the work of the English animal painter Edward Landseer. Rosa also studied anatomy by visiting slaughterhouses and performing dissections in order to study the animals’ bone and muscle structure. She then used this information in her preparatory sketches and studies before beginning to work on her paintings.

Artwork of the Day - Rosa Bonheur
Liverpool artwork of the day - Wednesday August 15 2007. 'The return from the mill' Rosa Bonheur (1822 - 1899) at Sudley House This is in the Morning Room at Sudley house, one of my favourite rooms. Emma Holt used this as her office after her father died in 1896. From here she helped to run Liverpool University, an area of the District Nursing Association, and many other health charities. In those days there was no National Health Service. There was much poverty in Liverpool, and Emma had been brought up to believe that it was the family’s responsibility to use its wealth for the good of the community. That idea is not so popular now is it. This French artist was a specialist in animals. The texture in the coats of the horse and donkey show that her style was rooted in direct observation of nature. She kept a small menagerie, visited slaughterhouses and dissected animals to gain anatomical knowledge. Her work was especially popular with English collectors. At a time when it was exceptional for women to have independent careers, Bonheur was a feminist ahead of her time. She had short hair, smoked and wore masculine clothing.

Signed and dated '72 Rarely during the nineteenth century did the artistic career and recognition of a woman eclipse that of her male counterparts. History recognizes few females from this period in the position of artistic authority, but Rosa Bonheur established herself as the foremost “animalier,” or animal painter, linked with landscape painting and the Realist tradition. Through contacts, exhibitions, and reproductions disseminated worldwide, Rosa Bonheur’s work was well known throughout Europe and America. Her unusual ways attracted considerable public attention and she harnessed this interest throughout her life and established a niche, commercially and artistically, for her work, becoming one of the most original figures of the 19 th century. Marie-Rosalie Bonheur was born March 16 th To [my father’s] doctrines I owe my great and glorious ambition for the sex to which I proudly belong and whose independence I shall defend until my dying day. ” More important for Rosa’s work was Raymond’s respect for the writings of Georges Sand and Felicité Robert de Lamennais, who believed that every living creature had a soul, creating a sense of respect within Rosa for the animals of the natural world. She would later own many animals, including horses, lions, and even an otter. Her love of animals translated into amazingly precise and interpretive depictions of their very nature and physiognomy.

'Tis the Season - But not for Rosa Bonheur Memorial Pet Cemetery
The setting is the holiday season 2005. A news article airs on the local news station ( WBAL in Ball-tee-more) about a local pet cemetery. Being the owners of four Siberian Huskies, the news article catches my wifes attention.
Seems that one of the local cemeteries is kinda famous. Not having grown up here - we had driven by it - but never knew the story behind it. We thought it was just another cemetery. Turns out to be one of the first pet cemeteries in the United States. Further - it is the first cemetery in the world where pet owners could be buried along with their pets.
According to the article it has fallen into ruin and many fear that it will be developed.
Having had some experience with the media in the past, we decide to go out and look for ourselves. It's not far from where we live. I would take my camera to do some test shoots with my new equipment - and we would just find out for ourselves.
    A brief history:
The place? Rosa Bonheur Memorial Park for Pets in Elkridge, Howard County, Maryland. Home of one of the first pet cemeteries in the world - opened in 1935 and covering 13 plots of land measuring some 300 by 700 feet.
