Movement, Style, School or Type of Art: Realism Date and Place of Birth: March 16, 1822, Bordeaux, France Life: Rosa had the great good fortune of being born to an artistic (and rather eccentric) couple. Her father, Oscar-Raymond Bonheur, was an artist, art teacher and ardent supporter of independent thought in his children, while her mother was a music teacher. Papa gave Rosa, brothers Auguste and Isadore, and sister Juliette (all of whom also became artists) art lessons, and kept a small barnyard containing a few assorted animals and poultry on their semi-rural property on the outskirts of Paris. Her fascination with, and meticulous rendering of animals fit in perfectly with Realism and popular trends in nature studies. Rosa was a hit with the public, and exhibited yearly at the Salon beginning in 1841. Her sales were brisk due partly to the fact that everyone had heard of her: she earned a living as an artist, won awards, smoked in public, wore overalls (she needed a special license to do so) and visited slaughterhouses to study animal anatomy. In short, she was a notorious woman.

Rarely during the nineteenth century did the artistic career and recognition of a woman eclipse that of her male counterparts. History recognizes few females from this period in the position of artistic authority, but Rosa Bonheur established herself as the foremost “animalier,” or animal painter, linked with landscape painting and the Realist tradition. Through contacts, exhibitions, and reproductions disseminated worldwide, Rosa Bonheur’s work was well known throughout Europe and America. Her unusual ways attracted considerable public attention and she harnessed this interest throughout her life and established a niche, commercially and artistically, for her work, becoming one of the most original figures of the 19th century. Rosa also gained more training and further developed her talent while working with her siblings on her father’s commissions. Raymond continued the tradition of the family workshop, which had fallen out of favor in the 19th century. Raymond’s career as an artist burgeoned and in order to meet the demand for his works, he began to employ his children’s assistance to complete commissions. From this point, the Bonheur children established their own artistic careers but continued to assist one another in order to complete commissions. In 1851, Bonheur established a relationship with the house of Goupil in Paris. Throughout the next years her painted images would be reproduced by Lefèvre in London and Goupil and Peyrol in Paris, disseminating her name and image, thereby increasing her fame beyond the scope of Salon visitors and clients.

Rosa Bonheur (1822-1899)
'It is in the rendering of cattle that Mlle Bonheur's skill has always displayed itself.' Rosa Bonheur was a French painter, but finds a place on these pages because of the popularity of her work in England. She was born in Bordeaux, eldest child of the painter Raymond Bonheur. Her childhood was difficult, the family being poor and her mother dying while she was yet an infant. After failed attempts at being a seamstress and attending school, she found her metier as an artist, studying under her father and at the Louvre. Her two brothers and sister were also artists. She turned to animal painting from age 17, working particularly in the Roule slaughter-house (where she acquired the lifelong habit of dressing in men's clothing). She exhibited at the Salon from 1840, and thereafter exhibited regularly there, gaining a gold medal. She became Director of the Female School of Design in 1849, on the death of her father who had previously held the appointment. Fame came in 1856, when the dealer Ernest Gambart exhibited her work The Horse Fair in his French Gallery in London. The work was made more popular through an engraving by

Paris Salon. Gold Medal of the First Class. Paris Salon. Cross of the Legion of Honour With the exhibition of her 1853 painting "The Horse Fair," Rosa Bonheur was established as one of the greatest animal painters of the 19th century and the most renowned female artist of her generation. Bonheur [nee Marie-Rosalie Bonheur] was born in Bordeaux, France. Her father, Oscar-Raymond Bonheur (1796-1849), was a trained painter and taught the fundamentals of art to Rosa and her brothers Auguste, Isidore, and sister Juliette. All four siblings pursued careers as artists; Isidore (1827-1901) gained acclaim as a sculptor, but Bonheur would prove to be the most successful of the family. Her father was an important influence both socially and artistically; she was later quoted as saying of him: “To his doctrines I owe my great and glorious ambition for the sex to which I proudly belong and whose independence I shall defend until my dying day.”

Bonheur, Rosa (1822-1899)
page: The most popular artist of nineteenth-century France, Rosa Bonheur was also one of the first renowned painters of animals and the first woman awarded the Grand Cross by the French Legion of Honor. A professional artist with a successful career, Bonheur lived in two consecutive committed relationships with women. Born on March 16, 1822 in Bordeaux, Marie Rosalie Bonheur was the oldest of the four children of Raimond Oscar Bonheur (1796-1849) and Sophie Marquis. Bonheur's father was an art teacher who came from a poor family, while her mother, a musician, had descended from a middle-class family and had been her husband's art student. Sponsor Message.
Bonheur's father, who taught drawing and landscape painting, was an ardent member of the utopian Saint Simeon society. The group held idealistic beliefs about the reform of work, property, marriage, and the role of women in society. Most importantly, for the artist's future, the Saint Simeons questioned traditional gender norms and firmly believed in the equality of women. While teaching artistic techniques to his oldest daughter, Raimond Bonheur also encouraged her independence and taught her to consider art as a career. In 1828 Raimond Bonheur joined the Saint Simeons at their retreat outside Paris. Sophie and the children joined him in Paris the following year. Four years later, however, Raimond abandoned his family to live in isolation with his fellow Saint Simeons.

Rosa Bonheur
was one of the most famous painters and sculptors of the 19 th century, receiving both critical and public acclaim for painting in the style known as the “ juste milieu” , a middle ground that managed to combine the innovations of the Barbizon painters with more traditional genre and landscape conventions. Rosalie, to be known as Rosa Bonheur, was born in Bordeaux on March 16, 1822 . Her father, Raimond, was a minor artist and drawing master and her mother a member of the minor gentility. After the July Revolution of 1830, Raimond moved the family to Paris , and then left them in order to participate in a monastic socialist utopian group. His wife Sophie gave music lessons during the day and sewed piecework at night in order to support herself and their 4 children. Rosa Bonheur was only eleven when her mother died. Fortunately for the family, Rosa 's paintings began selling almost immediately. In 1840, when still only nineteen, she had two works accepted for the Salon. From then until 1855, she was to have work in the Salon every year. Impressed with the growing popularity of animal paintings and sculpture, she began to study natural history and comparative anatomy in order to render them more convincingly. Most of her early work was based on a small menagerie her father allowed her to keep in their sixth floor apartment. Though she only wore masculine apparel when working, that, combined with her cigarette smoking and riding astride, made her subject to speculation. An advocate of the writings of the feminist Flora Tristan (Paul Gauguin's grandmother), she believed in women's right to self-determination, using her career as an explanation for avoiding marriage:

    Rosa Bonheur (1822 - 1899)
This French artist was a specialist in animals. The texture in the coats of the horse and donkey show that her style was rooted in direct observation of nature. She kept a small menagerie, visited slaughterhouses and dissected animals to gain anatomical knowledge. Her work was especially popular with English collectors. At a time when it was exceptional for women to have independent careers, Bonheur was a feminist ahead of her time. She had short hair, smoked and wore masculine clothing.
