Interesting Rosa Bonheur's real name was Marie-Rosalie Bonheur, but she is often referred to as Rosa.
Rosa Bonheur's love for animals doesn't only show in the many paintings she made, but she also kept quite some animals at her home. A friend of Rosa once wrote: "At one time Rosa Bonheur had a complete menagerie in her home: a lion and lioness, a stag, a wild sheep, a gazelle, horses, etc. One of her pets was a young lion whom she allowed to run about and often romped with.... I was easier in mind when this leonine pet gave up the ghost."

The Horse Fair, 1853
Rosa Bonheur was the most well-known woman artist of the nineteenth century. She worked at a time when the art world was dominated by men. From an early age Bonheur spent hours sketching animals in parks on the outskirts of Paris. As women were not permitted to attend the official art schools, she received instruction from her father, a landscape artist. In 1865 Bonheur became the first woman to receive a cross of the French Legion of Honour, a reward for outstanding achievement in her field. This is a reduced version of a painting now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. It shows a lively scene in Paris's horse market. In order to achieve such a level of realism, Bonheur dissected animal parts and attended horse fairs. She attended the fairs dressed as a man, having gained permission in 1852 from the Prefecture of Police to dress in men's clothing. The final version of The Horse Fair was shown in Paris in 1853 and was well received. Following the exhibition, the painting was engraved by Thomas Landseer, and thereby attained widespread popularity in England and several other countries. This version, in the collection of the National Gallery, was finished and signed by Bonheur, but had been begun by the artist's life-long friend, Nathalie Micas. Home Museum Home RPSGB Home Tate

BONHEUR [MARIE ROSALIE], Rosa (1822-1899), French painter, was born at Bordeaux on the 22nd of March 1822. She was of Jewish origin. Jacques Wiener, the Belgian medallist, a native of Venloo, says that he and Raymond Bonheur, Rosa's father, used to attend synagogue in that town; while another authority asserts that Rosa used to be known in common parlance by the name of Rosa Mazeltov (a Hebrew term for "good luck Gallice Bonheur). She was the eldest of four children, all of whom were artists - Auguste (1824-1884) painted animals and landscape; Juliette (1830-1891) was "honourably mentioned" at the exhibition of 1855; Isidore, born in 1827, was a sculptor ,of animals. Rosa Bonheur was born in Bordeaux and learned the fundamentals of art from her father, Raymond Bonheur. She had a great affection for animals - and in particular horses. This painting, The Horse Fair, is considered her greatest work. Rosa Bonheur
Marie-Rosa Bonheur, usually called Rosa Bonheur was a French realist painter and sculptor. She was born at Bordeaux, 1822.
Bonheur came from very artistic family. Her father was a landscape painter taught by Henri de Saint-Simon. She had sisters, Auguste Bonheur, artist and Isidore Jules Bonheur, sculptor. And she was the instructor of Anna Elizabeth Klumpke.
She was taught to paint by her father since, as a female, she could not at the time attend art school. She showed a great affinity for animals, and made them her specialty. She was influenced by the English animal painter Sir Edwin Henry Landseer.
Bonheur was visiting slaughterhouses and performing dissections to study animal anatomy, preparing sketches and detailed studies for her paintings and sculptures. She received a French government commission which led to her first great success, the 'Horse Ploughing at the Nivernais'. Her most famous work was the monumental 'Horse Fair'. Same year she traveled to Scotland to exhibit her work to Queen Victoria, where she completed sketches for later works including 'A Scottish Raid', and 'Highland Shepherd'. She was especially popular in England much more than in her native France.
She was considered the most famous woman artist of her time. Today, she is perhaps famous because of wearing men's clothing. She is now seen as an early feminist. She said at the time that this was simply practical, as it facilitated her work with animals. She was controversial for the time. Through the Empress Eugenie, she received the Cross of the Legion of Honor. During the siege of Paris, her studio was spared.
