"Arnold Böcklin is one of those artists whose work I found utterly fascinating from the very first viewing. His work is possessed of such a deep emotion and symbolism that it is difficult not to be affected when confronted with one of his paintings. I have compiled
this collection of images, gathered from across the internet, both as a reference for myself, and to share with the world. Please note
that these pages are intended for educational study and inspiration, and to increase awareness of this historical artist's work,

Biography Arnold Böcklin was born on October 19, 1827 in Basel, Switzerland and died on January 16, 1901 in S. Domenico in Fiesole. After completing his Böcklin's work was quite popular during his time, and he was able to support a large family and lifelong career; a contract with the Berlin art dealer Fritz Gurlitt in 1880 helped to secured this existence. Originally devoting himself to landscape painting, as early as 1860 mythological references and symbolism began to permeate Böcklin's work, and gave us the pieces with which we are most familiar today.

He studied at D¼sseldorf where he became a friend of Ludwig Andreas Feuerbach . Originally a landscape painter, his travels through Brussels Zurich Geneva and Rome , exposed him to classical and Renaissance art, and the Mediterranean landscape. These new influences brought allegorical and mythological figures into his compositions. In 1866 he resided at B¢le , in 1871 in Munich , in 1885 in Hottingen (Switzerland) and at the end of his life in Fiesole near Florence. Isle of the Dead (Die Toteninsel) Influenced by Romanticism his painting is symbolist within the Art Nouveau style. His pictures portray mythological, fantastical figures along classical architecture constructions (revealing often an obsession with death) creating a strange, fantasy world. B¶cklin is best known for his five versions of Isle of the Dead , which partly evokes the English Cemetery, Florence

Back to Symbolism Arnold Böcklin was a Swiss painter, born in Basel on 16th October 1827, the son of a textile merchant, and went on to become one Switzerland's major 19th century artists. His allegorical and fantastical paintings, many based on mythical creatures, anticipated 20th-century surrealism. His early style consisted of idealized classical landscapes. In the 1870s, he turned to fantastic scenes from German legends, paralleling the use by Richard Wagner of similar subjects in opera. His later works, such as "The Island of the Dead" (in five versions, from 1880, one in the Metropolitan Museum, New York City), became increasingly dreamlike and nightmarish. The centenary of his death (16th January 2001) was celebrated by Swiss Post's issuance of a special stamp in September 2001, showing the artist's view of "Venus". After training at the Basel Municipal School of Art and Düsseldorf Academy of Art, Böcklin went on a study trip through the Alps, from the Grisons to Lake Geneva, in 1847. In 1848, when he was in Paris, he was caught up in the confusion of the February Revolution.

"Böcklin … was an energetic figure devoid of the languid melancholy of 'decadence'. Italy's light and aura of antiquity were decisive in his early development; his paintings quickly came to be populated with mythological figures, with centaurs and naiads. Not until his fiftieth year did he begin to paint the powerfully atmospheric works associated with his name today. "Among the most famous of these is the painting known as The Isle of the Dead (1880), which Böcklin himself entitled 'a tranquil place'. It was clearly important to him; he made five different versions of the composition. The new title was suggested by the white-draped coffin on the boat, the funerary presence of the cypresses, and the overwhelming impression of immobility and silence. The white figure vividly lit by a setting sun is contrasted with the dark, vertical forms of the trees, impervious to the slanting rays of the sun. Like a dream, the painting condenses a number of contradictory sensations and emotions. "Böcklin's choice of imagery is not coincidental. A young widow had asked him for an 'image to dream by', and the funereal serenity perhaps echoes something of the artist's own emotions about death. At the age of twenty-five, during one of his stays in Rome, he had married the daughter of a pontifical guard who bore him eleven children between 1855 and 1876; five of them died in infancy, and the Böcklin family was twice (in 1855 and 1873) forced to flee cholera epidemics.

DEATH: Died on 16 January 1906: Arnold Böcklin , Swiss Symbolist painter born on 16 October 1827. In the later 19th century, he was one of the most celebrated and influential artists in central Europe, particularly Germany and Switzerland, notable for his imaginative and idiosyncratic interpretation of themes from Classical mythology.
The Island of the Dead (in five versions, from 1880), became increasingly dreamlike and nightmarish.
The Island of the Dead
(1880) and The Sacred Wood (1882). In 1895 he moved to his villa at San Domenico, near Fiesole. It was here that he lived the last years of his life, continuing to paint until his death on January 16th 1901. Art historians have always found it difficult to classify this original, proud, somewhat eccentric painter who, like Da Vinci, experimented in his garden with human flight. He disliked giving titles to his pictures and declared that he painted in order to make people dream:
Schirmer
, who recognized in him, a student of exceptional promise, and sent him to Antwerp and Brussels, where he copied the works of Flemish and Dutch masters. Böcklin then went to Paris, worked at the Louvre, and painted several landscapes; his
