PARLIAMENT HOUSE ESTATE Parliament House Estate comprises the Parliament House, Reception Office building, Sansadiya Gyanpeeth (Parliament Library Building), Parliament House Annexe and the extensive lawns around it where ponds with fountains have been provided. Special floral decoration is done at important points in the building during sessions of Parliament as well as on other important occasions. By the very nature of things, Parliament House Estate as a whole and the Chambers of the two Houses in particular are subject to strict security precaution all round the year. The entire Parliament House Estate is enclosed by an ornamental red sand stone wall or iron grills with iron gates that can be closed when occasions demand. The approach roads which cut across the Parliament House Estate and form part of the Estate are not allowed to be used as public thoroughfares. Parliament House is one of the most magnificent buildings in New Delhi which has one of the brightest clusters of architectural gems possessed by any country in the world. Visitors to the capital invariably pay a visit to this building as the two Houses of Parliament—the Lok Sabha (House of the People) and the Rajya Sabha (Council of States) are located within its walls. Construction of the Building The building was designed by two famous architects— Sir Edwin Lutyens and Sir Herbert Baker—who were responsible for the planning and construction of New Delhi.

This magnificent building overlooks the River Dart and the sea, and is set in 126 ares of landscaped grounds. It is now the principal facility in the UK for the training young naval officers for not only the Royal Navy but also many other nations. The stunning Edwardian architecture, internal and external, designed by Sir George Aston Webb, contain numerous beautiful features linking it to both Royalty and Admiralty. The Quarterdeck with its high vaulted ceiling, is surrounded by the-finest wrought ironwork of the Poop Deck gallery which leads to the Commodore's Flat containing a unique and complete collection of Second World War naval portraits by Sir Oswald Birley. The Main Corridor, the second longest in Europe, takes you from the beautiful Chapel and its memorial side chapels at one end to the splendour of the Senior Gunroom (SGR) at the other. The hand-painted and gold leaf bosses of the SGR ceiling took seven months to complete and compliment the finest portraits of Admirals that line its oak-paneled walls. From the Lobby, the great doors open with views across the Bridge, Parade Ground, past the Flagstaff and to the mouth of the river with its castles and beyond to the open sea. 2000 also saw the opening of a new Museum by Prince Philip whilst celebrating the 60th anniversary of his time at Dartmouth; a time when he met, the then, Princess Elizabeth for the first occasion in the gardens of the Commodore's residence. This small yet fine Museum has collected together many pictures and artifacts showing the history of BRNC from its beginnings in 1863 as two vessels moored in the River Dart, through the opening in 1905 of today's College. It gives an insight into the ever-evolving way of life and training of naval officers to meet the defence requirements of the time.

George Blackall
Simonds (1843-1929)

Born: 6th October 1843
at Reading, Berkshire
Sculptor Died: 16th December 1929 at Bradfield, Berkshire
George Simonds was the second son and fourth child of George Simonds Senior of Reading William Blackall Simonds Bradfield , and ‘Holly Copse’ in Goring, all close to his mother’s ancestral home, Bradfield House, where he finally settled. The Central Park ‘Falconer’ has suffered extensive damage, both from weathering and vandals. In danger of toppling in 1937, it was shored up and repatinated. In 1941 it was repositioned. In 1957 a new bronze falcon was fashioned and reattached. Later vandals cut off both the hand and falcon, which compelled the Parks Department to remove the sculpture to storage for safekeeping. In 1982 a replacement was cast and the statue then reset on its pedestal. In 1995 the Central Park Conservancy again repatinated and coated the statue, which today stands as an embodiment of the Park’s rich 19th Century sculptural inheritance, as well as its abundant bird species that includes the peregrine falcon. Simonds himself was an avid falconer. He became Founder President of the British Falconers’ Club in 1927 and was later depicted with a falcon in his official portrait as chairman of the family brewery, by Sir Oswald Birley RP (1880-1952). In 1884, with a group of young architects and artists inspired by John Ruskin (1819-1900) and William Morris (1834-1896) he founded and became the first Master of the Art Workers Guild in London. Their objective was to create a unified forum for architects, artists and craftsmen. Simonds said of the guild: “…it differs from all Art Societies in that it is not formed for the propagation of any one branch, or style, of art…. I find some things of the spirit of the Studio Life of Rome”.

After the war a tanker operation was added to its cargo and passenger services, the latter deploying fewer but larger and faster ships. Without the mail contracts there was no longer a need to replace all the war losses and a steep postwar rise in shipbuilding costs acted as a break on any rapid expansion plans. Two notable additions were the 27,995 tons Himalaya completed in 1949 and the 45,000 ton Canberra delivered in 1961, the latter only being recently been taken out of service. The Canberra was built for line voyages but when the jumbo jet killed off the traditional passenger services in the early 70's she reverted to cruising and became very popular in that role.

Lord Desborough abilities, appointed him manager of that house in 1900. He was given a partnership in 1904; and in During the war of 1914-1918 it was decided that all British and allied purchases of American war materials should pass through the Morgan firm in New York; and Grenfell with his fellow partners was closely concerned with the great task of organization involved in this immense series of transactions. Grenfell's reputation in the City of London was such that, when he aspired to Parliament in 1922 he was adopted as Conservative candidate for that constituency. At a by election in May 1922 he was returned with a majority of 3,936; and in the general elections of 1922 and 1923 both he and Sir Frederick Banbury (later Lord Banbury q.v) were returned unopposed. He remained in the House of Commons until 1935, when he was raised to the peerage as baron St Just, of St Just in Penwith, in the county of Cornwall. Grenfell continued throughout his life to take a lively interest in the affairs of Harrow School, and served as a governor from 1922 until his death, which took place at Bacres, Henley-on-Thames, 26 November 1941.

Although its launch won't speak with the volume, say, of Talk magazine, Cheap Date –a very different enterprise–is attracting the attention of youthquakers around town. Described as "the magazine for thinking thrifters," Cheap Date New York 's launch is scheduled in New York on July 1. It was started two years ago in London. "Taking charge," as founder Kira Jolliffe said, "as the only antidotal anti-fashion magazine around, uncovering a population who didn't yet know they were sick of being told what to wear and do and waking up bored in the process." "Points of view are really important," Mr. Richards continued. He blamed MTV for "the homogenization" of everything hip. "I'm sick and fed up, and so are my friends, with the conveyor-belt look that represents style. MTV sets the standards for what young people think is music and fashion style, but it is made so impersonal. Everything has been passed through demographic studies." "We don't intentionally underwhelm," laughed Mr. Richards. "Humble yearnings is our basic byline. Meaning, we come from humble yearnings. The magazine does, anyway." His design for Cheap Date has a lively neo-psychedelic 'zine look with graphics inspired, in part, by 1960's rock posters.

    Lord Willingdon,
    Governor General 1926-1931
When Lord and Lady Willingdon arrived at Rideau Hall in the fall of 1926, they came with a wealth of international experience. Lord Willingdon had served as aide-de-camp to his father-in-law, the Governor of Australia, from 1897 to 1900. He had spent several years in India, as Governor of Bombay (1913-1918) and Madras (1918-1924). While on a diplomatic mission to China in 1926, he received news of his appointment as Governor General of Canada. Both Lord and Lady Willingdon appreciated the arts. During their years in Asia, they collected rare carpets, furniture and other souvenirs of their travels. These treasures introduced a new note of oriental elegance to the traditional European style of Rideau Hall. When the Willingdons left Canada in 1931, they returned to Asia, where Lord Willingdon served as Viceroy of India until 1938. Return to the Long Gallery To the Reception Room
