At the age of two, he and his family immigrated to the United States, settling in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Bierstadt was elected a full Academician of the National Academy of Design in 1860. He made a second trip to the West in 1863, which was followed by a visit to Europe in 1867. In 1871, he moved to California and established a studio in San Francisco. In 1873, he returned to New York. During the 1870s, Bierstadt executed a mural for the U.S. Capitol in 1875. He continued to produce landscapes throughout the 1890s. He also became somewhat of an amateur inventor. For instance, he promoted his own designs for the improvement of railway cars. Albert Bierstadt died in New York City in 1902.

paint Throughout the 1860s, Bierstadt's career soared on both sides of the Atlantic . His sale figures were the highest of any American artist, exceeding even Church's. In 1865, English and American buyers were paying as much as $25,000 apiece for paintings like “Storm in the Rocky Mountains, Mt. Rosalie ”. These were reported in the press and by the artist to the point where they became the stuff of legend – the poor immigrant child who had become, by dint of hard work and self-education, the highest-paid artist in America . Appallingly, Bierstadt's last years were spent in relative obscurity and financial distress. His magnificent villa Malkasten burned to the ground in 1882 while he was attempting to sell it. Though he continued to paint, he was paid little attention and died suddenly in 1902 without much notice from the art world. Yet critic William Howe Downes did note at the time that “his pictures are as good today as they ever were; it is not they which have changed”. Today, Bierstadt's reputation has been restored, his work brings prices that would certainly make him smile, and he is represented in major museums and galleries across America . His work is a priceless legacy; as scholar Nancy Anderson says, “In paintings that became visual sanctuaries (much the way national parks became literal sanctuaries), Bierstadt offered safe haven for the wilderness myth that lay at the heart of America 's definition of itself.” In Bierstadt's work, as we once did in the man, we see ourselves.

Albert Bierstadt
Birth Year : 1830 Death Year : 1902 Country : Germany Albert Bierstadt, born near D¼sseldorf, Germany, was the leading painter of what may be thought of as the Rocky Mountain section of the Hudson River School. He came to the United States in 1832 and spent his boyhood in Massachusetts. He produced his first oil painting when he was twenty-one, and two years later went back to D¼sseldorf where he remained for four years, learning to paint in the approved nineteenth-century German Romantic manner. Bierstadt returned to America in 1857 and spent a summer in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, sketching and taking photographs of scenery. In 1858, he joined a government expedition to the Rocky Mountains, where he made quick sketches in oil, never taking more than fifteen minutes to portray a scene. His aim was to rework these sketches in his studio to get the best effects possible from the picturesque and unknown scenery. Since he was not interested in exactitude, he altered the scenery for dramatic weight and thus distinguished himself from the meticulously naturalistic Hudson River artists Thomas

Interesting During his career, Albert Bierstadt was one of the wealthiest and most succesful painters alive. His enormous paintings depicting the newly accessible American West sold for great amounts into public and private collections. However after the people had lost interest in the impressionistic style of the Hudson River School, Bierstadt soon lost a lot of money and finally even declared bankruptcy in 1895.

Bierstadt's reputation was firmly established in the early 1860s through paintings celebrating natural wonders of the American West that expeditions had begun to survey only a decade before. The grandeur of the Rockies and the Sierra Nevadas, acclaimed in newspapers and popular literature back East, aroused national pride in these newfound natural splendors rivaling Europe's great Alps in the public's imagination. During his second trip west in 1863, Bierstadt visited Yosemite Valley, making oil sketches and drawings that would serve as studies for finished paintings he would compose in his New York studio. In contrast to canvases that suggest the expansiveness of the western landscape in monumental scale, the Museum's painting of Yosemite Falls is modest in its dimensions. Dramatic interest is created through the interplay of atmospheric affects: the spray from the falls above and the glassy reflections in the still water below. -SES Back

Albert Bierstadt
Yosemite Valley - 1866
Dialogue by Mark:
Reptiles live in nearly every natural habitat in the world, from deserts to jungles to the open ocean. You would be able to find rock-hopping lizards in the landscape shown in today's Masters' Gallery...probably basking in the sun on the rocks by the river. Kim Solga, our biologist of art history, found us this beautiful painting by the American artist Albert Bierstadt at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Along with the gold rush, trappers and explorers, and settlers moving west in covered wagons, it was also popular for artists to travel out into the frontier to paint the spectacular scenery of the American west. Albert Bierstadt is one of the most fameous of these artists. He journeyed into the mountains and the wilderness, carrying his paints and canvases by horseback. He even came north to paint Mount Shasta, the huge volcano in northern California where KidsAret and Kim, our resident art hsitorian, live.
This painting is titled Yosemite Valley, created by Bierstadt on location when he visited this incredible valley in the high Sierras. The towering cliffs make the two people and their horse appear tiny. Then the towering clouds make the cliffs themselves seem small.
Notice how Bierstadt painted the clouds, with light streaming down between the huge thunderheads. The light falls in patches on the landscape, lighting up some areas brightly and leaving other parts in shadow.
