Cho-looke, the Yosemite Fall
Oil on canvas, 34 1/4 x 27 1/8 in. Bierstadt earned his initial popularity with a series of landscape paintings of the Rocky Mountains. The works were based on sketches he made on a United States Government expedition engaged in mapping an overland route to the Pacific. In 1863, he set out with a group of artists on his second western trip to visit the valley of Yosemite.
This painting, done in his New York studio after his return, conveys the spectacular scale and natural majesty of Yosemite Falls, then thought to be the highest in the country. At the close of a day of sketching, the artists gather at their camp near a grove of oaks and cypresses. Light illuminates the falls and the meadow bordering the Merced River. In the right corner of the painting are a sketching umbrella, a color-box, and other objects that Bierstadt took on the expedition. Next Return to American Collection

    Albert Bierstadt
    Birth Year : 1830
Death Year : 1902 Country : Germany Cole , Frederick Edwin Church, and Asher B. Durand. Bierstadt's works are dramatically lit and colored almost to a formula: ice-blue water; richly green foregrounds sharply distinguished from blue and green mountains which fade hazily into the distance, capped with fluffy clouds that make bright reflections; and genre elements-animals, Indians, soldiers, settlers-in the immediate foreground. Both as original oils and as engravings, Bierstadt's works were very successful, not only in the United States, but also in Europe, where his works fortified the conception of the wildness of the young nation. Before long, he could command prices of up to $35,000 for a large oil canvas, and his works adorned the castles of Europe and the homes of American millionaires. European critics praised his work, and he was awarded medals in Austria, Prussia, Bavaria, Belgium, and France. He chose, however, to remain in the United States, and he built a huge castle, Malkasten, overlooking the Hudson, where he lived and worked until his death. Born in humble circumstances in Solingen, Germany, he emigrated at age two to America with his parents and his two brothers. The family settled in New Bedford, Massachusetts, where his father became established as a barrelmaker. Little is known about Bierstadt's rearing or early artistic training, but he was advertising himself as an instructor in monochromatic painting in New Bedford in 1850, the same year he exhibited thirteen of those works and one drawing in Boston. His collaboration during the next three years with a daguerreotypist who produced theatrical presentations of American scenery laid the foundation for his lifelong interests in photography and North American topography. Gallery of Albert Bierstadt Paintings
Albert Bierstadt (1830-1902) is best known for his huge, panoramic landscapes of the unsettled west. He was born in Germany, and was two years old when his family emigrated to America and settled in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Beginning in 1859, he made three trips west, each time making oil sketches on paper. When he returned to his New York studio, he used these sketches and oil studies to paint detailed panoramic views of Western scenery. His paintings emphasized the spectacular landscapes, sometimes exaggerating what he had seen. At the height of his career, he lived in a mansion on the Hudson; but he died in New York City flat broke. A fuller biographical sketch of Bierstadt is available.
I have admired the work of Albert Bierstadt for several years, but haven't sufficient space in my home to display more than a few prints. So, I created this section of my website as a tribute to his work. Though there are amazingly over 875 paintings displayed on these "walls," this gallery is not intended to be a complete nor definitive collection of his works. You can purchase prints of his works at many places, though many paintings are available only in private collections or in museums.

    Albert Bierstadt
When Bierstadt was about two years old, his family moved from Germany to New Bedford, Massachusetts. He returned to Dusseldorf, Germany between 1853 and 1857 to study painting. On his return to the United States, he organized an exhibition in New Bedford of 150 paintings, including works of all the major artists of his day. In December, 1857 the Boston Athenaeum bought one of his works, The Portico of Octavia Rome, thus assuring his career. Bierstadt always loved mountains, and he visited the White Mountains before he left for Düsseldorf, for his signature appears in the register on top of Mount Washington on August 11, 1852. He returned at various times from 1858 to 1886. Sometime in 1859 or 1860, Bierstadt visited New Hampshire with his brother, Edward, working in the then new medium of photography. He stayed at the Conway House in Conway, listing himself as "A. Bierstadt, New York," on September 13, 1862. He also spent considerable time at the Glen House in 1869 while at work on Emerald Pool, which he considered his finest work. He exhibited at the Boston Athenaeum from 1859 to 1864,at the Brooklyn Art Association from 1861 to 1879, and at the Boston Art Club from 1873 to 1880. A member of the National Academy of Design from 1860 to 1902, he kept a studio in the 10th Street Studio Building, New York City from 1861 to 1879. He was a member of the Century Association from 1862 to 1902.

Lionberger Davis A Ithough it is a small sketch, this work should be recognized as one of the talismanic paintings of the West. It probably records the shocking spatial disorientation triggered by seeing the endless plains and mountain ranges of the West for the first time. The wagon, the horses, and the rider are suspended in space somewhere in the open-ended plains. Except for the continuous mountains, there are no markers by which to measure anythingno wagon tracks, hoofprints, bushes, compositional diagonals, or zigzags. The travelers move through a land without leaving a trace and are unable to measure easily the miles they have traversed. There is no possibility of determining the yardage to the grazing animals except by means of atmospheric color; proximity and distance are based on clarity of contour and color alone. Ironically, this, too, is disorienting, since one can see both more and farther in the clear air of wilderness than in the polluted air of towns and cities. For Bierstadt, the plains were probably impossible to organize into compositional units, a factor that might explain his preference for mountain-valley themes. A generation ago, this type of landscape might have been termed "alienated," since the artist refused to organize and control it. Today we are more interested in process and mechanistic explanations and might call it a "nonstructured" or "nonspatialized" space. This kind of open composition was used later, in the late 1860s and after, in western paintings by Worthington Whittredge and John Kensett; Whittredge traveled west in 1866 and 1870, and Kensett in about 1856-57, 1868, and 1870.

    ARTISTS OF THE AMERICAN WEST
T he frontier spirit is part of America's birthright, and the most tangible expression of that spirit has been the march westward throughout our 19th century history. For American pioneers the West held the promise of new lands and opportunities; for American visionaries it embodied one of the last outreaches of the imaginationa wilderness whose primeval beauties and dangers incarnated the quintessential Romantic experience. Just as composers like Cadman and Farwell or musicologists like John and Alan Lomax, with their cowboy ballads and folk tune collections, were drawn to exploit western themes, so, too, did visual artists seek to capture the drama of the land and its bold inhabitants. The best-known of these were Albert Bierstadt and Frederic Remington.
    Albert Bierstadt
German-born Bierstadt, whose teachers had included the German Romantic painter Lessing, drew his initial American inspiration from the late painters of the Hudson River School . After a brief period of activity in the White Mountains, he departed for St. Louis in 1858 and then struck out on his own for the Wyoming Territory, where he spent a solitary summer sketching the American Indians, wild animals, and virgin landscape.
