He began his career working for his father, a sculptor. Among his early sculptures are Apollo and Daphne David baldachin over the tomb of St. Peter in Rome. Bernini's architectural duties increased after 1629, when he was appointed architect of St. Peter's Basilica and the Palazzo Barberini. His works often represent a fusion of architecture and sculpture, as in the Cornaro Chapel, in Santa Maria della Vittoria, Rome, with its celebrated theatrical sculpture, The Ecstasy of St. Teresa colonnade enclosing the piazza before St. Peter's. Aprendió los rudimentos de la escultura en el taller de su padre, Pietro (1562-1629), un escultor manierista de cierto relieve. Fue también su padre quien lo puso en contacto con algunos de los mecenas más importantes de su tiempo, lo que le permitió manifestar su talento de una forma bastante precoz. En sus obras más tempranas ( Eneas Anquises y Ascanio El rapto de Proserpina ) resultan ya evidentes la ruptura con el manierismo tardío y una concepción radicalmente distinta de la escultura; el intenso dramatismo, la grandiosidad y la búsqueda de efectos escenográficos están ya presentes en estas primeras creaciones. En 1629, Bernini fue nombrado arquitecto de la basílica de San Pedro por el papa Urbano VIII. Desde entonces hasta su muerte trabajó ininterrumpidamente para los sumos pontífices, salvo un cierto paréntesis durante el pontificado de Inocencio X, quien prefirió a otros artistas y le encargó pocas obras. De sus realizaciones para San Pedro destacan el gran baldaquino sobre el altar mayor y el grupo escultórico de los Padres de la Iglesia que, observado a través de las columnas del baldaquino, ofrece efectos de una gran fuerza teatral, tal como pretendía el artífice.

Apollo and Daphne Bernini was a dominant force in sculpture during the Baroque period. Bernini's works range from religious to mythological subject matter. His rendition of the biblical hero "David", taken from the theme of Early Renaissance sculptor Donnatello, and the famous High Renaissance sculptor Michelangelo, was done for cardinal Scopine Borghese, and it helped to establish his reputation as a fine sculptor. These sculptures were all intended to be placed against a wall, so for this reason Bernini concentrated on creating them with one chief point of view. Bernini was also the great fountain builder of the time as seen in his "Neptune and Triton"(1620) and various other fountains placed throughout Rome.
