Hidden symbolism in Bernini's 'David'
by Guy Shaked Keywords: David, Davide, Gianlorenzo Bernini, Galleria Borghese, Shaked The statue of David, by Bernini, depicts David in a crucial moment in his life. The young man (only twenty years old) stands in front of Goliath, the giant Philistine warrior, facing a battle of life and death. He shed the armor of the warriors which he was given, since he was not accustomed to, wearing heavy armor, and using only the slingshot (a shepherd's weapon), attempts to hit the giant. David gathered momentum, and for a part of a second stands motionless, as he is taking aim, before throwing the stone at Goliath. His body expresses the great physical strain he is under, and his face expresses determination and concentration. His body expresses the great phisical strain he is under, and his face expresses determination and concetration. David's pose is in accordance to that suggested by Leonardo Da Vinci for "when someone is to cast spears, stones or other similar things": " a has oriented his feet in this direction [i. e. the direction of his movement]. Having twisted and moved himself towards the other side, where he prepares for the application of his power, he pivots with speed and convenience towards the point at which he wishes to release the stone from his hands" [1]. It is also in that aspect similar to Polyphemus Furioso (painted on the "Galleria Farnese" cieling) by Carracci, a painter which also had influence on Bernini's religious creations.

Clarke notes a specific example. He demonstrates Bernini's complete grasp of these Spiritual Exercises in his famous sculpture of the great Spanish Carmelite reformer, Teresa of Avila. It is found in the Cornaro Chapel in Santa Maria della Vittoria in Rome. The vision is the kind we are enjoined to summon up for contemplation by St. Ignatius in his Spiritual Exercises which Bernini practiced. St. Ignatius urges us to picture each religious event in its setting and to conjure up the image of the holy person in order to converse with it. This desire for visual, even tactile, reality lies behind Teresa's vision and Bernini's representation. (Hibbard, 1974. pp. 137-138]

Its origin may be traced to certain large decorative schemes which Bernini conceived. . . . It is fair to say that Baciccio lacked creative originality. This Bernini supplied! Bernini (b. Naples, Italy 1598; d. Rome, Italy 1680) Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini was born in Naples in 1598, the son of a Florentine sculptor by whom he was trained. After settling in Rome, Bernini came to the attention of the future Pope Urban VIII. Under the patronage of Pope Urban VIII, Bernini spent his entire career in Rome where he gained his architectural fame under Alexander VII (1655-67). Considered the creator of the Baroque style , Bernini created a fusion of architecture, painting, and sculpture that led to the generation of new, dynamic forms. His works used the drama of false perspective and trompe-l'oeil to create an impact that involved the spectator. He also created a much copied palace facade type which he articulated with massive pilasters above a rusticated base. Although Bernini grafted completely new sculptural forms onto Renaissance buildings, he maintained a continuity with the original serenity of the Renaissance ideal.

Gian Lorenzo Bernini dominated the Roman art world of the seventeenth century, flourishing under the patronage of its cardinals and popes while also challenging contemporary artistic traditions. His sculptural and architectural projects reveal an innovative interpretation of subjects, use of forms, and combination of media. BERNINI, Gian Lorenzo (b. 1598, Napoli, d. 1680, Roma)
Biography
Italian artist who was perhaps the greatest sculptor of the 17th century and an outstanding architect as well. Bernini created the Baroque style of sculpture and developed it to such an extent that other artists are of only minor importance in a discussion of that style. Early years Bernini's career began under his father, Pietro Bernini, a Florentine sculptor of some talent who ultimately moved to Rome. The young prodigy worked so diligently that he earned the praise of the painter Annibale Carracci and the patronage of Pope Paul V and soon established himself as a wholly independent sculptor. He was strongly influenced by his close study of the antique Greek and Roman marbles in the Vatican, and he also had an intimate knowledge of High Renaissance painting of the early 16th century. His study of Michelangelo is revealed in the St Sebastian (c. 1617), carved for Cardinal Maffeo Barberini, who was later Pope Urban VIII and Bernini's greatest patron. Bernini's early works attracted the attention of Cardinal Scipione Borghese, a member of the reigning papal family. Under his patronage, Bernini carved his first important life-size sculptural groups. The series shows Bernini's progression from the almost haphazard single view of

edit Early life
Bernini was born in Naples to a capable Mannerist sculptor, Pietro Bernini , originally from Florence . At the age of seven he accompanied his father to Rome, where his father was involved in several high profile projects. There as a boy, his skill was soon noticed by the painter Annibale Carracci and by Pope Paul V , and Bernini gained the patronage exclusively under Cardinal Scipione Borghese , the pope's nephew. His first works were inspired by antique Hellenistic sculpture.
edit Rise to master sculptor
Under the patronage of the Cardinal Borghese, young Bernini rapidly rose to prominence as a sculptor. Among the early works for the cardinal were decorative pieces for the garden such as The Goat Amalthea with the Infant Zeus and a Faun , and several allegorical busts such as the Damned Soul and Blessed Soul . By the age of twenty-two years, he completed the

38. Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini
Biographical sketch of the great 17th century baroque sculptor / architect.
http://www.boglewood.com/cornaro/xbernini.html
Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini
Born: 7 December 1598, Naples Married: 1639, Caterina Tezio Died: 28 November 1680, Rome GIOVANNI LORENZO BERNINI was, in the assessment of Janson ( History of Art , p. 410), the greatest sculptor-architect of the 17th century. He began his career as a student of his father Pietro Bernini (1582-1629), a sculptor who had himself worked at one time with Camillo Mariani Later he attracted the patronage of Cardinal Maffeo Barberini, for whom he designed a palace. When Barberini was subsequently installed as Pope Urban VIII, 1623, Bernini was put in charge of building operations at St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican, where one of his early works, 1624-33, was the canopy [baldachin] over the high altar. He also created, 1657-66, the soaring marble, gilded bronze and stucco Chair of St. Peter [Cathedra Petri] for the Basilica. Bernini's baroque style was a powerful influence on the architecture of his period. His most famous architectural works are the symmetrical curved colonnades of St. Peter's, the facade of Barberini's palace, and the arsenal at Civita Vecchia. Late in his career Bernini designed a series of three churches, culminating in the domed Sant' Andrea al Quirinale, 1658-70, in Rome.
