Benson Frank Weston Benson March 24 November 15 ) was an American Impressionist artist , and a member of the Ten American Painters Benson was born in Salem, Massachusetts . In 1879, he began study at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston , and later at the Acad©mie Julian in Paris . Upon return to America, he would become an instructor at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Some of his best known paintings ( Eleanor Museum of Fine Arts, Boston Summer Rhode Island School of Design Museum ) depict his daughters outdoors at Benson's summer home on the island of North Haven, Maine . Zorn, Anders Master Outdoor Painters Frank Benson Frank developed an interest in art and at sixteen informed his mother he would like to pursue art as a profession. His mother convinced his father to allow Frank to attend the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. On his 21st birthday, Frank was given the sum of $1,000 dollars and a ticket to Paris to attend art school. He was also instructed by his parents to return home when his money ran out. In Paris, Frank attended the Academie Julian under Gustave-Rodolphe Boulanger and Jules Joseph Lefebvre. He stayed in Europe from 1883 to 1885, spending the summer of 1884 in Concarneau, Brittany, painting outdoors with the artist colony. When Frank returned to Salem in 1885, he worked as a portrait painter-to limited success. In 1887, he took a position at the Portland School of Art in Maine. He stayed there for only one year. He returned to Salem and married his childhood friend, Ellen Peirson.

The Art of Frank Benson -American Impressionist- -Sunlight- Of all the artist that I love, I must say that Benson (1862- 1951) is one of my favorites. He is in good company- my favorite artists include Thomas Dewing, John William Waterhouse, and John Singer Sargent- all of which have their own separate rooms in the Galleria. Mention his name, and not very many people are familiar with it. Though he was well known and respected in his day, in modern times Benson has fallen into relative obscurity in the fifty years since his death. -Portrait of My Daughters- His most recognizable work is Summer , featured below, depicting two of his daughters and two other friends. Benson's family provided much inspiration for his work and can be found as the subjects of many of his paintings. However, it was mainly his daughters Eleanor, Elizabeth, and Sylvia who posed for his paintings. -Red and Gold- Frank Weston Benson was born in Salem, Massachusetts on March 24, 1862. By age sixteen, he revealed his wishes to his family that he would like to be an artist and later went on to attend the newly founded Museum of Fine Arts in Boston in 1880. For his twenty first birthday in 1883, he recieved a ticket to Paris and enrolled in the Academie Julian to end out his art training abroad, like many artist of his day had done. Upon his return from Europe, Benson married childhood friend Ellie Pierson in 1888. A portrait of her in her wedding dress is shown below and was completed a year after their marriage.
