[Regions of Italy] "T he most modern of the ancients and the most ancient of the moderns" I n Venice, most visitors concentrate on their three "T"s: Titian, Tintoretto and Tiepolo. But there is another great artist who is sometimes overlooked, even though he is officially considered the founder of the Venetian school of painting.
P artly because he lived so long (circa 1430-1516), Giovanni Bellini was in many ways the protagonist of a profound change in Venetian art. When he was born, the Republic was in the throes of grafting a late Gothic style onto the city's existing layer of Byzantine splendor. Giovanni spent his childhood working as an apprentice in the very successful workshop of his father Jacopo, during the years when the decoration of St. Mark's Basilica was in full swing.
T hen, in 1453, his elder sister married Andrea Mantegna, one of the most advanced students of perspective in all of northern Italy. Giovanni was deeply impressed by his brother-in-law's evolutionary work, just as he was later amazed by the ability of Piero della Francesca and Antonello da Messina to place groups of people within complex three-dimensional settings, something that had been virtually unknown just a few years before. A mong Venetian artists, Bellini led the way in fostering the style of "tonalism," which gave less importance to design and graphics while highlighting the tones of light and color. By the time Titian was starting his career, the elderly Bellini was breaking new ground again by adding mythological and allegorical scenes to the religious ones that had dominated the art of the fifteenth century.

By Giovanni Bellini
INTRODUCTION
Giovanni Bellini was the most important painter active in Venice in the late 15th Century.
BACKGROUND
Giovanni was born in Venice in 1430 where he was later raised by his mother and father, Jacopo Bellini and Anna Reversi. Giovanni's father, Jacopo, was also an Italian Renaissance artist. Jacopo was taught by Gentile du Fabriano. Jacopo later named his oldest son Gentile after his teacher, Gentile du Fabriano. Gentile Bellini later died on Febuary 23, 1507. Giovanni also had a sister Niccolsa who married Andrea Mantegain. Andrea was also a Renaissance painter. Before Giovanni became popular he was an apprentice in his father's workshop. Then later when Giovanni mastered painting he taught Giorgione and Titian who later outdid their own teacher. Then a little while later Giovanni died at the age of 86 in 1516. He was buried in Venice. A while after his death most of his greatest works were destroyed in a church fire in the year of 1577.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Giovanni had some very beautiful effects in the way he painted. His paintings have a hazy warm light. The colours are deep and glowing. Light and shade give the paintings a softening effect. He painted in oils.

He was the pre-eminent teacher of his generation, with a sizeable workshop staffed by pupils and assistants, among whom were Giorgione and Titian . Like his brother, he became chief painter to the State, although Titian tried desperately to usurp him. In 1506, when Giovanni was 76, wrote that he was 'very old but still the best in painting'. Bellini portrayed the elected ruler of Venice, the Doge Leonardo Loredan . In this style of portraiture he was strongly influenced by a characteristic Flemish attention to detail and texture, especially the play of light on the surface of the subject. The Doge is exquisitely protrayed in his ceremonial robes, made in an old-fashioned style but from a newly imported material - damask - which has gold thread running through it. Instead of using gold leaf, Bellini painted the surface roughly so as to catch the light and give a metallic finish - a revolutionary technique at the time." Born in Venice, Giovanni Bellini began as an assistant in his father's workshop and continued painting into his mid-80s, gaining steadily in achievement and recognition. His first phase as an artist was strongly influenced by his formidable brother-in-law, the Paduan painter Andrea Mantegna , from whom he took a sculpturesque figure style; a sense for the potential eloquence of contour line; and occasional compositional ideas, as in the early Agony in the Garden (1460s, National Gallery, London). These are, however, infused with Bellini's own subtle perception of color and light, an exceptional sensitivity to the natural landscape, and a human empathy far more direct and tender than Mantegna's.
These personal components of Bellini's style, which became fundamental to the character of Venetian Renaissance painting as a whole, found expanded scope and an altered form in his painting of the 1470s. Flemish painting and, in 1475

    Giovanni Bellini
Giovanni Bellini was born in Venice in 1426. He was the son of Jacopo and brother of Gentile Bellini. Giovanni Bellini began as an assistant in his father's workshop. His first phase as an artist was strongly influenced by his formidable brother-in-law, the Paduan painter Andrea Mantegna, from whom he took a sculpturesque figure style.
In his paintings, figures, space, light, architecture, and sometimes landscape were balanced with seemingly effortless perfection to achieve a complex but harmonious image of serene grandeur. Bellini's historical importance is immense. In his 65-year evolution as an artist, he brought Venetian painting from provincial backwardness into the forefront of Renaissance and the mainstream of Western art.
He died in Venice in 1516.

His most important contribution to art lay in his experimentation with the use of color and atmosphere in oil painting. His poetic landscapes influenced Giorgione, Titian, and other Venetian painters of the 1500's. Giovanni Bellini's Saint Francis
The man is easily recognized as St. Francis from his light brown cassock and tonsure. Any Renaissance Venetian would also quickly notice the wounds of the crucified Christ on his hands. The painting, completed by Giovanni Bellini (d. 1516) just past the middle of his long career and now in the Frick Collection in New York, clearly shows the popular saint's traditional features, intensely focused expression, and rural cell furnished sparingly with a skull. Bellini has somehow encompassed both the ecstasy that was held to accompany the stigmata and the solitude and community with nature of a life spent in contemplation. The first miracle was said to have been given to only the holiest of men. The other, Bellini plainly insists, has been the gift of even fewer.
    A miracle
To ask how Bellini could combine the richness and austerity of the saint's legend is to look for the subject of the painting, and art historians cannot agree on one. Conventionally, Francis is shown in meditation or else receiving his miraculous markings. In the first case he sits alone in his cell. In the latter story he kneels, while rays from an angelic source pierce his hands and chest and a brother Franciscan bears stunned witness. Bellini's St. Francis has abandoned his quiet cell to stand alone, erect and looking skyward. His chest is unbared. The only radiance is of that glorious sun. A few art historians have wanted a way to fit the painting's features more exactly, a discipline of art history traditionally called
