Following Footsteps
Calmer Times 3 comments This was the house of John Lane and Elkin Mathews and it was called The Bodley Head, after Sir Thomas Bodley, the founder of the Bodleian Library.  And in the two years spanning 1894/1895 its books became a byword for notoriety, scandal and beauty.  Leonard Smithers' fabled collections bound in human skin.  'The Happy Hypocrite', Max Beerbohm's fairytale of masks and redemption.  'Stella Maris', Arthur Symon's love poem to a prostitute ("I know/Your heart holds many a Romeo").  'Under The Hill' by Aubrey Beardsley - light, baroque, a minuet of Victorian pornography.  And 'The Yellow Book', the periodical colored like the French novels gentlemen read in secret (and ladies not at all) - a collection of essays, poems and illustrations:  new decadent, irresistible - a dirty pool in which the demi-monde could finally see its reflection. The newspapers mocked, the critics were shocked:  everyone was happy until April 3, 1895.  Oscar Wilde was sentenced to two years hard labor on that day, for "acts of gross indecency", despite his lucid wit, his moving speeches and the applause that followed him like his shadow.

English illustrator and leading member of the Aesthetic Movement . His meticulously executed black-and-white drawings show the influence of Japanese prints and French rococo, and also display the sinuous line, asymmetry, and decorative mannerisms of art nouveau. His work was often charged with being grotesque and decadent. He became known through The Yellow Book magazine, for which he was the art editor, and through his drawings for Oscar Wilde's Salome hut(3)

Aubrey Vincent Beardsley: 1872 - 1898 Aubrey Vincent Beardsley was born in Brighton on the English Channel, on August 21, 1872. He grew up a consumptive, full of an intense nervous energy and aware that he would not live long. Like many delicate children, he was precocious; he became a talented pianist, an avid reader, a witty, elaborate speaker, and a devotee of the theater and Wagnerian opera. When he was 11 his family moved to London. At the age of 16 he became a draftsman in a surveyor's office, then joined an insurance company near the well-known bookshop Jones and Evans. It was Frederick Evans who got him his first commission, for five hundred illustrations to a new edition of Malory's "Morte d'Authur." At the age of 20 Beardsley gave up his job, to devote his days to the museums and galleries and the pursuit of social contacts, and his nights to drawing. The mock-medieval, late Pre-Raphaelite style of his work in the "Morte d'Authur" gave way to his admiration for French painting of the 18th century and for James McNeill Whistler's Peacock Room , which he had seen in 1891. He abandoned all interest in realistic representation to concentrate on design in two dimensions. From Greek vases he learned to mass black against white.

Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Blog It Multimedia 2 items Aubrey Beardsley (1872-1898), English artist, whose sensitive, highly imaginative style and hedonistic, occasionally macabre subject matter place him within the European fin-de-si¨cle artistic movement. In his short life (his productive career spanned only six years), Beardsley achieved a reputation as one of England's most innovative illustrators. Beardsley, born in Brighton, briefly attended the Westminster School of Art in London. Other than this short stint of formal training, he was self-taught. By the age of 20 he was executing art commissions. Characteristic of his work are large areas of black and white, hard, curving lines, rich ornamentation, and disregard of conventional perspective and proportion. Recognizable influences include the great Japanese printmakers and the pre-Raphaelite painters. The fantastic and occasionally erotic nature of his illustrations aroused great controversy.

Aubrey Beardsley - The Victorian Parodies
These are the naughty images that kids like to giggle at. Actually, I giggle, too. Aubrey Beardsley was not at home in the Victorian society in which he lived. These images poke fun at that society and its values. He did make people think. Although most of his drawing were for books or magazines seen by few people, his erotic and haunting drawings have been well known for more than a hundred years.
