A Gallery of his Drawings
Aubrey Beardsley's art has gone in and out of fashion many times over the last century. But there is no doubt he has had a lasting impression on many artists who followed him. His life was a brief one. Born in 1872, he achieved fame early, but was dead by age tewntyfive. His drawings were not mere illustrations, but formed an integral part of the English Aesthetic Movement and are best understood in this context. "The Dancer's Reward"
( 570 x 671 / 14 k / gif) This drawing was one of Beardsley's illustrations for the English translation of Oscar Wilde's Salome , published by Elkin Mathews and John Lane, London, 1894. Wilde's work was originally published in a French edition to circumvent English prudishness. The Yellow Book , cover art, Vol. I, April 1894.
( 384 x 511 x 256 / 10 k / gif) The Yellow Book has been referred to as the quintessential periodical of the 1890's in England. Beardsley served as art editor of this avant-garde literary journal from its inception in April 1894, until he was dismissed a year later. This was the time of Oscar Wilde's arrest and conviction for homosexual practices and Beardsley, quite unfairly, was seen as having to close a link with Wilde. "Mrs. Patrick Campbell"

Aubrey Beardsley
English artist, born at Brighton, 1872; died at Mentone, France , 16 March, 1898. It has been cleverly said that Beardsley was "a boy who never grew up", and the statement has a considerable amount of truth in it. He was a wonderfully precocious boy all his life, with the frank merriment, enthusiasm, and exuberance of a lad. He was unable to withstand the desire to do clever, mischievous things and to shock people of narrow opinions, and his ignoble and vicious works were more the result of his Puck-like mischief and eccentricity of habit than of any evil disposition. His earliest published work was a programme for an entertainment in 1888 at Brighton Grammar School, where he was a pupil, and his next in the "Bee Magazine", Blackburn, 1891. Young Beardsley commenced work as a clerk in the Guardian Fire Office, but at the earnest persuasions of Aymer Vallance and Pennell he entered Fred Brown's studio at Westminster and devoted his attention to illustration. While still a lad he attracted the attention of Sir E. Byrne-Jones and Puvis de Chavannes , and it said much for his genius that it received encouragement from men so different in their aims and practice. When nineteen he accepted the tremendous task of illustrating the "Morte D'Arthur", and carried it through. The famous article upon him in the "Studio" appeared in April, 1893, and from that moment his work was in great demand. In April, 1894, he became art editor of the "Yellow Book", the first numbers of which

Aubrey Beardsley
Aubrey Beardsley was the most controversial artist of the Art Nouveau era, renowned for his dark and perverse images and the grotesque erotica, which themes he explored in his later work. His most famous erotic illustrations were on themes of history and mythology, including his illustrations for Lysistrata and Salome He died very young of tuberculosis, at the age of 25, but left an expressive quantity of works. Aubrey Beardsley Art Images has some of his illustrations, some NSFW , but there is an advice. There are more of his works and information on Aubrey Beardsley: An Overview In Black and White The literary remains of Aubrey Beardsley , with works of prose and verse, and Le Morte D'Arthur the online version of the book with Beardsley's illustrations. Beardsley had an unswerving tendency towards the fantastic of the gloomier and "unwholesome" sort. His treatment of most subjects was revolutionary; he deliberately ignored proportion and perspective , and the "freedom from convention" which he displayed caused his work to be judged with harshness. In certain phases of technique he especially excelled; and his earlier methods of dealing with the single line in conjunction with masses of black are in their way unsurpassed, except in the art of

Beardsley's career as an artist only lasted for six years. It began in 1892 when Dent asked him to illustrate Malory's Morte Darthur . (Dent used Malory's 15th Century spelling instead of calling it the Morte d'Arthur .) Beardsley's career ended in March 1898 when he died of tuberculosis (T.B.) at Menton in France. On the left is one of Beardsley's chapter headings for the 'Morte Darthur'. In 1891 Beardsley and his sister Mabel had visited Burne-Jones. Beardsley showed him his drawings. Burne-Jones praised them and advised him to take art lessons. He then went to evening classes as he worked as an insurance clerk during the day. Dent's invitation to illustrate the Morte Darthur meant he could give up this job. He had to design over 40 full page borders and hundreds of chapter headings for the book, as well as twenty full or double page illustrations.

  • I started this project about 3 years ago, when I took a razor blade to an already falling apart copy of "The Early Works of Aubrey Beardsley" (Dover Edition 1967) and scanned in all of the images.
I've taken a few liberties with color corrections, scaling, and compositing of multi-page images. Some may be ever so slightly skewed because of the way they were scanned in, meaning - very primitively using a relatively crummy $40 Plustek flatbed.
Special thanks to all of you who send me photos of the tattoos you have had done as a result of an image you downloaded from this site. Maybe I should devote a special gallery just to that phenomenon.

Beardsley, Aubrey (1872-1898) English decadent artist Aubrey Beardsley was a precocious talent who made a lasting contribution to the art of illustration. One of the greatest of the Symbolists and a master of pen and ink, Beardsley developed a highly original, formally elegant style, inspired in part by Greek vase painting, in which ornamental rhythm of line combines with a perverse and wickedly satiric imagination to create unforgettable images, often hilarious, frequently erotic, and sometimes deeply moving. Beardsley was born on August 21, 1872 in Brighton, England into a genteel family, but one rendered nearly destitute by the incompetence of his businessman father. He was a musical and artistic prodigy, so his talent was obvious very early, but so was his ill health. He had his first attack of tuberculosis, the disease that would eventually kill him, at the age of nine. For the rest of his brief life, he was plagued by numerous illnesses and relapses.
