Add to del.icio.us RSS On June 18, 1894, a crowd gathered in the small park on the southeastern tip of the Ile Saint-Louis in Paris to listen to Eugene Guillaume (1822-1905) dedicate a monument (Fig. 3) to Antoine Louis Barye, the French sculptor and painter who, during the second and third quarters of the nineteenth century, had popularized the art of the animalier, or specialist in animal subjects, in both France and abroad. Guillaume, an academic sculptor, had served as the titular president of the committee that erected the memorial, but much of the organizational work, including raising funds and overseeing construction, had fallen to an American expatriate, George A. Lucas (1824-1909). Indeed, the execution of the project, which was largely dismantled during World War II, represented the combined efforts of Barye's French friends and staunch American admirers. Z Search The Oxford Dictionary of Art: Barye, Antoine-Louis Printable Version Download PDF Cite this Page Barye, Antoine-Louis b Paris, Sept. d Paris, June French sculptor, painter, and printmaker. Barye was the most famous animal sculptor of the 19th century and was largely responsible for making the small animal bronze a recognized genre; artists specializing in this kind of work became known as animaliers . He trained as a goldsmith (his father's profession) and also studied sculpture and painting ( Gros was briefly his teacher). His knowledge of animals came partly from observing them in the Jardin des Plantes, Paris, and partly from extensive reading. In 1831 he had his first notable success at the Salon with Tiger Devouring a Gavial (Louvre, Paris, and other casts) and this launched his career; only two years later he was made a member of the Legion of Honour. Much of his work is in a similar Romantic vein, stressing the drama and savagery of nature. Barye also created large-scale sculptures, including a stone pediment relief of

Antoine-Louis Barye (1796-1876) the earliest and most famous sculptor of the French animalier school. This bronze measures just over 20 inches in length and 121/2 inches high. The base is 93/4 inches wide and 19 inches long. The Four Winds Collection acquired this outstanding piece from the estate of a west coast collector, who originally purchased the piece in New York 20 years earlier from a prominent New Yorker.
