Barye, Antoine Louis
Barye, Antoine Louis key , French animal sculptor. Son of a Parisian goldsmith, he followed his father's trade as a youth. In 1832 he exhibited at the Salon his Lion and Serpent (Tuileries), which won him recognition; but only late in life did he achieve fame and free himself from debt. His simple, romantic, and forceful studies of animals or groups of animals were often small and designed for commercial reproduction in bronze. They enjoyed an international popularity and are still highly prized. Well-known examples of his work are

French, 1796-1875 Antoine-Louis Barye Antoine-Louis Barye was a French artist who went to the zoo nearly every day. With his sketchpad in hand, he visited the wild animals to observe how they snarled, how they strode about, and how they swished their tails. He studied the way the ferocious lions pounced, how the massive elephants lay down to sleep, and how the boas coiled themselves around the branches of a tree.

Antoine-Louis BARYE (1795-1875) Born in Paris, Antoine-Louis Barye was the son of a goldsmith, Pierre Barye. Barye started to study at The Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1818 under the neo-classical sculptor Bosio and the romantic painter Gros.
In 1823, Barye worked for the goldsmith Fauconnier, modelling small animals. In 1831, Barye was the first exhibiting animals at the Salon with his famous "Tiger devouring a Gavial". Barye is known as the master of the Animalier School of Sculpture.
Antoine-Louis Barye was dubbed the "Michelangelo of the Menagerie" by the celebrated art critic, Th©ophile Gautier, in l’Illustration, May 1866. His work was in the spirit of Romanticism, particularly his preference for rendering violent movement and tense posture. Barye also did the pediment Napoleon dominating History and the Arts on the Pavilion de l'Horloge of the Louvre and an equestrian statue of Napoleon at Ajaccio, the Emperor's birthplace in Corsica.
In the second period from 1845 to 1857 Barye entered into an association with the engineer Emile Martin. Three catalogues of his works were published, but the arrangement ended. In the last period of time 1857-1875, Barye took back full control of his models. During this period, Barye created the most beautiful and subtle patinations and four other catalogues were published.

He was born in Paris, the son of a goldsmith, and studied sculpture and worked for a goldsmith. His early pieces, such as Lion Crushing a Serpent (1832, Louvre, Paris), embodied a romantic taste for violence and were well received by the salons until the large works were rejected in 1837. Working commercially thereafter, he produced small wild-animal groups based on direct observation, which are masterpieces of accuracy in anatomy , movement, and character. Also inspired by classical

Antoine-Louis Barye was born in Paris on September 15, 1796, the son of a goldsmith who had recently moved from Lyon. The family was probably poor since it is said that Antoine-Louis did not get around to learning to read until he was twelve years old. He had no formal schooling and was completely self-taught, relying entirely on his own reading, prodigious memory and acute powers of observations.
Barye's lifelong intimacy with metal began at the age of thirteen when he was apprenticed to a die-maker called Fourrier who produced military decorations. Here he remained for four years and it was during this time that he developed an interest in the art of medal engraving which eventually led him to sculpture.
His career was interrupted for two years in 1812 when he was drafted into the army at the age of 16. He was attached to an engineer's corps and engaged in topographical modelling, sculpting 'reliefs' for the forthcoming battles. After his release from the army Barye entered the studio of the academic sculptor Bosio. Bosio was a purist for convention and this straight jacket of regimented style left Barye infatuated with the natural, with frankness and with truth....... The contemporary critic, Gustave Plant, suggests 'It is to the timid uncertain method of Bosio that we owe the boldness seen in all of Barye's work'.
Without leaving Bosio, Barye entered the studio of the great artist the Baron Goss, here he found inspiration from the exciting canvasses depicting tumultuous battle scenes - rearing horses with flowing manes, riders with plumes billowing - the romantic conception which Barye was later to capture so magnificently in his sculpture.

Drawing on recent scientific discoveries, the exhibit will examine the complex techniques employed by Barye. He also pioneered the production of extensive editions of bronzes for the rapidly expanding middle-class. The exhibit was organized by the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore from its renowned holdings. Works on display include those collected by William T. Walters, a wealthy businessman and friend of Henry Flagler. The exhibition will also feature three significant works by Barye in the collection of the Flagler Museum. A beautifully illustrated exhibition catalog is available through the Museum Store.
