Artist : Antoine-louis Barye Nationality: French Movement: Romanticism Media: Sculpture Influences: Biography: Originally trained as a goldsmith, Antoine-Louis Barye served in Napoleon’s army before studying sculpture and painting. He entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1818 and adapted the romantic-style subject matter of violent and majestic animals. After his crocodile-like sculpture entitled Tiger Devouring a Gavail, won a medal at the Salon of 1831, Barye became a successful and independent sculptor and painter. His animal sculptures competed at the Salon alongside the more traditional and revered human figures. In 1845, Barye began a foundry that produced smaller and more affordable bronze statues. He was appointed the keeper of plaster casts at the Louvre and professor of zoological drawing at the Musee National d’Histoire Naturelle, both in Paris. Elected to the Academie in 1868, Barye inspired a later generation of animal sculptors who called themselves the animaliers. After studying under sculptor Francois-Joseph Bosio and painter Baron Antoine-Jean Gros he was in admitted to the ‰cole des Beaux Arts . But it was not until , while working for Fauconnier, the goldsmith, that he discovered his true predilection from watching the wild beasts in the Jardin des Plantes , making vigorous studies of them in pencil drawings comparable to those of Delacroix , then modelling them in sculpture on a large or small scale. In he exhibited his "Tiger devouring a Crocodile", and in had mastered a style of his own in the "Lion and Snake." Thenceforward Barye, though engaged in a perpetual struggle with want, exhibited year after year these studies of animalsadmirable groups which reveal him as inspired by a spirit of true romance and a feeling for the beauty of the antique, as in " Theseus and the Minotaur Lapitha and Centaur ), and numerous minor works now very highly valued.

The American Collections European Painting and Sculpture Collections Specialty Collections Antoine-Louis Barye Antoine-Louis Barye, the famous French animal sculptor and painter, has often been perceived as a link between Romanticism and the Barbizon School of art. Born the son of a jeweler in Paris in 1796, he was apprenticed at thirteen to an engraver of military equipment, then to a jeweler, but at the age of sixteen, was conscripted to the map department during Napoleon's last military venture. While serving in the National Guard, he met a sculptor who encouraged him in his artistic aspirations. As a result, when he left the military, he studied with the Italian sculptor Bozio and the painter Gros. Neither impressed him much and, having become obsessed with wild animals, he began a self-study of various naturalists and managed to gain entry to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts where he competed unsuccessfully for the Prix de Rome. In 1819, he won a second place for sculpture in a competition with a bas-relief medal showing Milo of Crotona being devoured by a lion. However, though he continued to compete, he won little and, needing to support himself and his family, went to work for the jeweler Fauconnier in 1823 where he remained for the next eight years, making jewelry and small figures based on the animal figures that obsessed him. He read natural science texts and attended dissections so that his work would be as realistic as possible. Along with his new friend, Eugene Delacroix, he began haunting the Jardin des Plantes, making sketches and wax sculptures of the exotic animals there. Eventually, a few of these were reproduced in bronze in limited editions and began being collected by the Orleanists, including the Duc d'Orleans, the Duc de Nemours, and the Duc de Luynes.
