14. National Remote Sensing Agency - Agriculture And Soils
Agriculture. Agriculture and Soils can provide timely and reliable informationon agriculture with respect to potentials and limitations of the soil,
http://www.nrsa.gov.in/engnrsa/spacesolutions/agriculture/
Home Space Solutions Agriculture and Soils Agriculture India is an agriculture-intensive country, and in this scenario, a technology like remote sensing can provide timely and reliable information on agriculture with respect to potentials and limitations of the soil, spatial extention of crops grown and pre-harvesting yield of major crops, which is a pre-requisite for optimal land use planning and formulating policies on food security. Forecasting the yield of mono and multiple crops is being done at NRSA. Acreage estimates and crop inventory is being done during Kharif and Rabi seasons forRice, which is the major crop grown in our country. Other crops like Banana, Chillies, Cotton, Maize, Sugarcane and Tobacco are also being inventoried. Satellite data can also delineate different crops that are grownin the same area, and an inventory of each of the crops can be done. This study is aided by sensors such as IRS WiFS/LISS-III/PAN and Radarsat ScanSAR. Some of the other studies include:
  • Crop condition assessment Agricultural drought assessment Pests and diseases Land capability and irrigability
Soils Mapping and monitoring of soil resources is one of the major prerequisites for estimating land capability and irrigability by assessing salt-affected soils, eroded lands, shifting cultivation, etc. For careful land use planning, water-logged areas have to be delineated in order to take up preventive and reclamative measures. Thisrequires dynamic assessment of the salinity/alkalinity content of the soil. These studies are taken up using IRS LISS-III and PAN data.

Soil Management

In Saskatchewan , agriculture land covers about 40% of the province. According to the 2001 census, 38 million acres (15.4 million hectares) were cropped and 7.7 million acres (3.1 million hectares) were left in summerfallow. Most of the soils have developed over the ten thousand years since the last glaciers retreated. But it is only in the last hundred years or so that these soils have been cultivated by man.
Black Chernozemic Soil Profile
Early settlers were given custody of some of the most fertile grassland soils in the world. In a century of soil management, our record has not been good. From the devastation of the "dirty thirties" through the overuse of summerfallow and monocropping to modern day pollution problems with fertilizers and pesticides, we seem intent on abusing one of the most valuable natural resources we have. What is a Soil? Why is soil important? What is it made of? Learn how we study soil through the traditional sciences of physics, chemistry and biology, but with a practical emphasis. The thin section of soil parent material under the polarized microscope shows the many soil minerals and pore space.
Soil Formation
Classification Soil is a product of the environment. Discover the factors and processes of soil formation. Find out why glaciation was important in creating our productive soils. Why are there soil zones and how many are there in Saskatchewan?
