New Crops: Peppermint and Grapefruit
BNL initiated a cooperative program in which dozens of organizations sent plant seeds and vegetative grafting stock to the Laboratory for irradiation by various methods, including the Gamma Field, the Graphite Research Reactor and special irradiation chambers. After the material was exposed, it was returned to the home organization for propagation and mutation screening. The organization then tracked mutations that appeared useful. Aside from the color and size changes that were achieved in a number of ornamental plants, an outstanding success story of this program concerns peppermint. Some years ago, the sole source of peppermint oil in the U.S. was the Mitcham variety, until it fell to a wilt disease caused by the verticillium fungus.

This group includes mosses, liverworts and hornworts. There is always an alternation of generations between morphologically distinct sporophyte and gametophyte. The familiar leafy plant of Bryophytes is the sexual, gamete-producing (gametophyte) generation of their life cycle. Tracheophyta (vascular plants, higher plants): This group consists of plants that have a vascular system, i.e., xylem and phloem (water/mineral and food-conducting tissues, respectively). Tracheophyte leafy plants are the asexual, spore-producing, diploid (sporophyte) generation of their life cycle. One Subphylum, Pteropsida, consists of the following Superclasses: i. Filinicae:

Graduate Fellowships in Plant Genetics
The Purdue Genetics Program (PGP) is pleased to announce the availability of a number of graduate fellowships in Plant Genetics through an NSF Graduate Training Grant. PGP is an interdepartmental graduate training program offering graduate students optimal flexibility in designing a graduate experience to meet their needs. We do this in two important ways. First, an incoming PGP student selects from nine different departments that best suits their long term interests. These departments include Agronomy, Animal Sciences, Botany and Plant Pathology, Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Entomology, Horticulture, and Veterinary Pathobiology. Second, an incoming PGP student selects from over 40 different faculty, those laboratories involved in research that is most suitable for the training experience that the student desires. All of this process is coordinated through the interdepartmental program to provide each student with training that is broad, well-rounded and of excellent quality in genetics. This training includes a core curriculum of four genetics courses as well as a PGP Distinguished Lectureship that invites internationally recognized geneticists to the Purdue campus. These scientists provide students with exposure to a diversity of modern innovations and cutting edge research in all area of genetics. These fellowships are available for September 1995 enrollment.

336 - Determining Quick Plant Genetics Using PCR Description
In this experiment, students learn about genotype/phenotype relationships by performing PCR using DNA extracted from EDVOTEK Quick Plants. The glabra mutant lacks trichomes on its leaves, as compared to wild type plants. By amplifying a region that differs between glabra and wild type plants, students also observe variation at the DNA level.

BOTANICA ACTA 111, 1-15. Review Development, Genetics and Molecular Biology of Mosses
Ralf Reski
Abstract
The first descriptions of sex chromosomes in plants, of the continuity of chromosomes during the mitotic cycle and of non-Mendelian inheritance as well as the introduction of UV-mutagenesis to genetic research are landmarks in biological sciences first achieved by scientists working on bryophytes. Haploidy of the tissue facilitates mutant isolation and many developmental moss mutants have been isolated. Early moss development is triggered by auxin, by cytokinin and by light, mainly acting via phytochrome and a blue-light receptor. Due to the simplicity of the plants, development can be pinpointed to the differentiation of a single cell and be analysed in living tissue, making mosses ideal candidates for the analysis of development in an integrated approach of cell and molecular biology. Molecular genetic techniques have been applied mainly to Physcomitrella patens (Hedw.)B.S.G., where efficient protocols for transformation of nuclear DNA have been established and several nuclear, chloroplast and mitochondrial genes have been analysed. These studies reveal that
