Identification of Household Spiders
Preventative Control of Household Spiders Physical Control of Household Spiders ... Chemical Control of Household Spiders Introduction Spiders commonly found in Canadian homes include house spiders, wolf spiders, cellar spiders, fishing spiders and, much more infrequently, black widow spiders. Spiders are usually found in corners of rooms, closets, boxes, dark crevices, basements, garages, and gardens. Spiders are excellent pest controllers. Wolf spiders are especially beneficial to farmers and gardeners because they prey on common crop pests such as cottonworms, gypsy moths and pea aphids. Spiders do not transmit any diseases. Although nearly all spiders have venom glands, they rarely bite humans and only a few species, such as the black widow spider, can have a dangerously venomous bite.
Identification of Household Spiders The spider has an unsegmented body with two main divisions, four pairs of walking legs and organs for producing silk which is used for making nests, webs to catch prey or cocoons for its eggs. Spiders can have up to eight eyes. With so many eyes, it is surprising that most spiders are near-sighted. Many spiders prey on pests such as flies, mosquitoes, plant hoppers and gypsy moths that get caught in their webs. Once the prey becomes tangled in the web, the spider immobilizes it by wrapping it in more silk and then injecting venom to paralyze it. Later the spider injects a predigestive liquid and sucks out all the nutrients from its prey. Most spiders are nocturnal, shy, and avoid confrontation by running away. They will only bite if squeezed or held.

89. Gardening Advice: Integrated Pest Management
Twentyfive years ago, Integrated pest management (IPM) seemed a utopian Integrated pest management involves using a variety of methods to control pests.
http://www.gardenweb.com/sesbania/ipm.html
Integrated Pest Management
The Garden as Ecosystem
Twentyfive years ago, Integrated Pest Management (IPM) seemed a utopian dream to mainstream agriculturalists. The idea that plant pests could be kept at acceptable levels without large amounts of chemical pesticides ran counter to everything they had been taught. But now IPM is embraced by nearly everyone involved in the field. What caused the turn around?
Chemical Miracles
When chemical pesticides were first introduced in large quantities in the 1940s, they were seen as miracles of modern life. Now all farmers had to do was spary their crops with DDT, or some other chemical, and they could achieve complete control. But within a couple of decades, problems began appearing. The most important of which is the environmental harm done by chemicals which are both toxic and persistent. Even 25 years after being almost totally banned in the U.S., DDT can still be found in the tissue of animals. But even disregarding environmental concerns, there were a number of other factors that called into question the wisdom of such uninhibited use of chemicals. First, when using an insecticide to control a pest, its natural predators are often killed off as well. This can have the unintended effect of actually causing an upswing in the pest population. Second, many insects can very quickly develop populations resistant to a given chemical. And third, when one pest is eliminated the door is opened to others that were less apparent before their competition was killed off. At first the solution to these problems seemed to be to just use more, or different, chemicals, but eventually it became obvious this was no more than a good way to line the pockets of chemical manufacturers.

Integrated Pest Management
Pest management is the science of preventing, suppressing, or eradicating biological organisms that are causing a problem. Today the term "pest management" is often used in place of such terms as "pest control," "plant protection," or other equivalent expressions. The term "pest" is often used to refer to invertebrate (arthropods, slugs, etc.) as a group in contrast to plant diseases and weeds. However, the term "pest" should apply to any unwanted biological organisms - especially when the problem is associated with agriculture or environmental issues. Pest management practices may be classified according to the approach or the method used to deal with a pest problem. In terms of approach, pest management practices may be designed to (1) prevent a problem, (2) suppress a problem, or (3) eradicate a problem. In regard to method, pest management practices may be classified in a number of categories of which the most common are (1) chemical, (2) cultural and mechanical, (3) biological, and (4) legal. The term " Integrated Pest Management " (IPM), implies integration of approaches and methods into a pest management system, which takes into consideration the ecology of the environment and all relevant interactions that pest management practices may have upon the environment in which one or more pest problems may exist. When IPM principles are applied to a given pest problem, it is generally assumed that environmental impact and economic risks have been minimized. Since IPM considers all applicable methods, it is also assumed that emphasis on chemical methods may be reduced when effective non-chemical alternative methods are available. As a result, implementation of IPM principles and practices is advocated in various federal and state regulations affecting pesticides. Section 11(c) of FIFRA specifically advocates that IPM techniques be included in training of certified applicators of restricted use pesticides.
