All gardeners experience pest problems from time to time. Insects, plant diseases, weeds, slugs, and other animals can cause significant plant damage. How you react to a pest problem depends on the value of the affected plants, the cost of treatment, the toxicity of available controls, and your personal gardening philosophy. Many gardeners are concerned about the use of pesticides. Some pesticides, if not used, stored, and disposed of carefully, can harm the applicator, the environment, children, pets, or other nontarget organisms. You can address these concerns by implementing integrated pest management (IPM) practices in your garden. Thoughtful, well-researched pest management choices will reward you, the environment, and the beneficial organisms with which you share your garden. What is IPM?

Sponsored Research Control of Resistant Dollar Spot Fungicide resistant (or "tolerant") dollar spot populations still present a significant challenge to turf managers who must find avenues for control. In some cases, managers are dealing with dollar spot that is resistant to more than one class of fungicide, which compounds the problem by limiting control options. Healthy School Environments

Pesticides are powerful tools for controlling pests. However, pesticides need to be used carefully and judiciously, especially when used in sensitive areas where children are present. Children are more sensitive than adults to pesticides. Young children can have greater exposure to pesticides from crawling, exploring, or other hand-to-mouth activities. Put simply, integrated pest management (IPM) is a safer, and usually less costly option for effective pest management in a school community. A school IPM program uses common sense strategies to reduce sources of food, water and shelter for pests in your school buildings and grounds. An IPM program takes advantage of all pest management strategies, including the judicious and careful use of pesticides when necessary.
