105. ETHZ - Polyproject PRIMALP - Sustainable Primary Production In The Alpine Region
An interdisciplinary ETHZ research project on sustainable agriculture and forestry in the Alpine region. Read project presentation, abstracts, and biography.
http://www.primalp.ethz.ch/
Our Mission Polyproject PRIMALP — Sustainable Primary Production in the Alpine Region The quickly changing ecological, economic, social, and political environments confront society and science with new challenges to solve existing and newly emerging conflicts which impede both a sustainable land use, and sustainable agriculture and forestry in the Alpine region. A broad interdisciplinary co-operation is required to develop improved technical, organizational and political concepts and solutions for sustainable future primary production. These principles are pursued within the scope of the Polyproject 'PRIMALP — Sustainable Primary Production in the Alpine Region'. The project has two main objectives:
  • Identification and development of sustainable agricultural and forestry production systems for the Alpine region ('best practices' projects); Development of tools and models for the analysis and evaluation of infrastructure requirements and policy decision-making ('best policies' projects).
Specific research topics are dealt with as individual projects . The results of the individual projects are integrated into a ' Core Project '. Within the scope of the Core Project, an ecological-economic model is built. It serves as a tool for the evaluation of alternative production systems and as a means for the development and communication of consistent concepts for a resource-efficient and sustainable agriculture and forestry in mountain regions.

*NEW GINSENG LAW*
GINSENG ROOTS MAY BE DUG ONLY BETWEEN SEPTEMBER 1 AND NOVEMBER 30
Revisions to West Virginia’s ginseng law move the traditional start date for the ginseng digging season back two weeks, meaning that the season will start on September 1 instead of August 15, making the revised ginseng digging season run from September 1 through November 30. The law was passed during the 2005 General Session of the Legislature in an effort to promote propagation of ginseng by allowing additional time for the seeds of the plant to reach maturity.
By law, anyone digging ginseng is required to replant the seeds from the parent plant in the spot where it was harvested. Under the longer digging season, many plants had failed to reach maturity by the start of the season and their seeds were not viable. Forestry officials are confident that most seeds will have reached maturity by September 1 and hope that many of the seeds will drop to the ground and reproduce. Legally, only ginseng plants that are five years old or older may be dug. The age of the plant is determined by the number of prongs; only plants with 3 or more prongs are considered old enough to harvest.

Forestry Incentives Program
On May 13, 2002, the 2002 Farm Bill de-authorized the Forestry Incentives Program (FIP), which was originally authorized in 1978 to share up to 65 percent of the costs of tree planting, timber stand improvements, and related practices on non-industrial private forest lands. Funds remaining on May 13, 2002 will be exhausted through FIP closeout, primarily funding the existing contractual backlog.
