  • Students will understand how to apply ecological analysis to cropping systems. Students will learn about key agro-ecological management practices, including soil and fertility
management, crop rotation, and pest management.
  • Back to top Background /Lessons: Introduction Like natural ecosystems, agro-ecosystems are characterized by nutrient flows and cycles, energy flows, and the interactions of living organisms with each other and the physical environment. However, agro-ecosystems differ from natural ecosystems in two key ways:
These two special qualities of agro-ecosystems in turn affect their key ecological processes. Sustainable agriculture seeks to take advantage of ecosystem processes by designing an agricultural system that works with them rather than against them to achieve its production goals. This section begins with a quick look at the role of the soil in the agro-ecosystem and then encourages students to think about the ecology of field crop production by posing four ecological questions.

  • Students will know the current role transgenic varieties play in the principal field crops of Iowa and Wisconsin. Students will become familiar with the major arguments for and against the use of transgenic crop varieties. Students will be introduced to some of the politics of science.
Back to top Background / Lessons Introduction Agriculture began at various places around the world around 10,000 years ago. Throughout the past 10,000 years an important feature of agriculture has been crop selection or breeding. Most of this selection has been in the hands of individual farmers, each of whom had slightly different ideas of what traits he or she wanted, and each of whom was looking to suit the particular needs of his or her farm. Farmers traded some seeds and bought some in times of shortage or to gain new varieties, but most of the time they saved their own from the previous year's crop. This process resulted in an incredibly wide range of crop varieties in traditional agriculture. Crop selection and breeding remains an important part of agriculture, but during the last century how it is done has changed markedly. Now it is researchers at universities, special research stations, and for-profit seed production businesses who do the crop selection and breeding that supplies seed for most of the world's staple crops (for a description of the seed industry in the US see

The current issue of California Agriculture , including PDF versions of all peer-reviewed research articles, can be viewed in full online at: http://CaliforniaAgriculture.ucop.edu/0402AMJ/toc.html The April-June 2004 California Agriculture delves into the myriad reasons for this phenomenon, including:
  • Horticultural crops consist of numerous, diverse varieties (such as dozens of kinds of lettuce), which increases research and development costs. Field crops, by contrast, often have fewer varieties that are planted over larger acreages. Too few acres of horticultural crops are planted to make the business model profitable for large life-sciences companies, as opposed to millions of acres planted in field crops. Commodity groups have been hesitant to pursue genetically engineered varieties, which they often believe may jeopardize sales of non-biotech varieties.

Field Crops Research
Integrating Sustainable Agriculture, Ecology, and Environmental Policy.
R. K. Olson (Editor).
Haworth Press, Inc., Binghampton NY.
1992. 161 pp. Paper and hardback. Price unknown. ISBN 1-56022-024-4 (paperback); 1-56022-023-6 (hardback). Whose business is it to create a sustainable agriculture? How will knowledge systems required to support such an agriculture be developed and implemented? These pragmatic questions are addressed by the 14 contributors to this book. If in fact the agricultural community is beyond the stage of understanding and internalizing the need for the concept of an agriculture that can be sustained, then this book offers concrete suggestions for the types of research objectives and social and political decisions that must be followed in order to make sustainable systems a reality. The book contains the proceedings of a July 1991 conference, sponsored by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) , that drew participants from academia and U S. government agencies. The proceedings have also been available since 1992 as volume 2, no. 3, of the Journal of Sustainable Agriculture (JSA). The publisher of this book, Haworth Press, also publishes the JSA, and the decision to make these proceedings available in both formats is understandable, since this book will be of value to an important audience that is larger than the readership of the journal. As the name of both the conference and the book reflects, the contributors represent various disciplinary perspectives and professional experiences, being primarily ecologists (7) and environmental policy makers (5), with the addition of a sociologist and an educator. The chapters cover a range of topics that can be grouped into structural issues (federal policies, EPA program priorities, information and education systems) and research issues (participatory research methods, identification and monitoring of indicators of sustainability, and theories and methods for the design of sustainable agricultural systems at the watershed, landscape and soil levels).

New York Is An Agricultural State
Agriculture is important to New York State.  Agricultural production returned over $3.0 billion to the farm economy in 2002.  About 25 percent of the state’s land area, or 7.6 million acres are used by the 37,000 farms to produce a very diverse array of food products.  Here are some of the items in which New York ranks high nationally: LIVESTOCK PRODUCTS
Dairy and animal production in New York provided  $1.87 billion to farmers in 2002.  That accounts for 60 percent of all cash receipts. DAIRY PRODUCTS
Milk is New York’s leading agricultural product and is produced all across the state.  Milk sales account for over one-half of total agricultural receipts.  Production in 2002 was 12.2 billion pounds with a value of $1.56 billion.  New York is the nations 3 rd leading producer and Wyoming is the State’s leading county.
