Field crops tobacco, soybeans, corn, cotton, peanuts, forages and small grains pervade North Carolina's rural landscape. But increased foreign competition and other factors make farming these traditional commodities risky. North Carolina Cooperative Extension helps by providing growers with the latest research-based information and recommendations on the best varieties and production practices for the state's conditions. Extension also helps growers comply with changing regulations, investigate new higher-value opportunities, develop solid business plans and explore marketing options.

Winter Wheat

One of the first crops grown in Alberta was winter wheat. It is the most common wheat in the world. This video looks at the process and the economics involved in growing this crop. The advantages are numerous and the risks are few. Through interviews with farmers, researchers and processors we learn about this commodity and how it can profit today's producers.

Soil and Water Management Diagnosing Crop Problems Series
Diagnostics is the same process doctors use to find out what's ailing their patients. They piece together as much information as possible, and assume nothing until all the facts are gathered. Only then does the doctor make an informed, intelligent choice as to the cause of the patient's problem. Find out how this process can help you in treating a soil or crop problem.

Outstanding in your Field: Diagnosing Crop Problems

Maybe you noticed it on only a few seedlings, or maybe the whole crop seemed affected. It might have just appeared since yesterday, or it may have been there since you can remember. You're not sure what it is, but you don't like it. Outstanding in Your Field takes you through simple diagnostic steps in finding, identifying and treating a crop or soil problem. It also offers a new look at the growth stages involved in cereal crops to help you determine when to spray, or what the yield potential will be. (Updated) (19 min.)

Purdue s College of agriculture wants faculty who seek to excel and can grow with us. Activities on other field crops will be conducted as appropriate.
http://www.agriculture.purdue.edu/facultycareers/cropping_systems.html
Cropping Systems Purdue University's College of Agriculture is a leader in the development and adoption of new technologies that relate to field crops (corn, soybean, small grains, and forages). Field crop production is important in Indiana. In 2002, 51 percent of the state's total land acreage was devoted to the production of field crops. There has been an emphasis, especially in recent years, on the systems approach to enhancing sustainable field crop production. Indiana field crop producers have benefited from Purdue-generated technology improvements in areas such as:
  • Conservation tillage,
  • Efficient nutrient management,
  • Crop seeding systems,
  • Grain quality analyses,
  • Crop varieties,
  • Pasture management systems, and
  • Integrated approaches to pest management.
Our five new positions in these areas will complement a very strong Purdue Extension program in cropping systems. Successful candidates will work collaboratively in developing and delivering an integrated Extension curriculum that will address the production and marketing needs of our diverse clientele in traditional and non-traditional crop production. We seek individuals who:
  • Are creative in developing high-impact outreach and applied research programs
