Reducing the length of the soft white section to approximately 20 cm and the overall length to 40 cm or less will not only solve the problem of Welsh onions not fitting supermarket baskets or refrigerators, but is also expected to save labour, make for easier cultivation and extend the shipping period. Given more diverse consumption patterns, this mini vegetable has potential to be a hit with consumers, and is already attracting widespread interest.

Squash prospects bright
New Caledonia's farmers expect to reach a 3,500 tonne production target for the much-prized squash pumpkin, which is in very high demand in Japan. But they said 2004 will remain as a bad year, mainly due to floods in June were some 500 tonnes of squash were lost. As a result, the output for 2004 reached 2,860 tonnes, 2,700 of which have been exported to Japan. Some 40 farmers in New Caledonia are specialising in squash pumpkin production, mainly in the south of the main island. MIDDLE EAST AND AFRICA

Live sheep trade set to resume
Saudi Arabia and Australia will reportedly soon sign a memorandum of understanding to facilitate livestock trade. The lucrative live sheep trade has been at a standstill after a disagreement about stock condition in 2004 resulted in the rejection of a shipload of sheep that subsequently bounced around the Gulf region in search of a buyer. The MOU will see shipments resume, and lead to an estimated 30% decrease in prices inside the kingdom. NORTH AMERICA

Millions of living, breathing animals in corrals, cages, and feedlots are providing Californians with juicy steaks, fried chicken, bacon and eggs, ice cream, cheese, leather upholstery, garden amendments, and much more. In the process, such issues as food safety, environmental stewardship, disease prevention, and animal comfort arise. UC scientists are working closely with ag-animal industries to ease problems and boost production. We want to give journalists a closer look. The University of California will present a seminar for the news media on animal agriculture from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, at the UC Veterinary Medicine Teaching and Research Center, 18830 Road 112, Tulare. Australia
Rural outlook
Commodity exports are forecast to reach a record A$116 billion in 2005/06, according to the June release of Australian commodities from the Australian Bureau of Agriculture and Resource Economics (ABARE), with a positive outlook for the minerals and energy sector. For the rural sector, poor seasonal conditions in early 2005 in the eastern states and South Australia are expected to have a significant impact on the outlook for 2005/06. Earnings from farm exports are forecast to fall by 2.5% to A$27.2 billion in 2005/06, following an expected rise of 7% to A$27.9 billion in 2004/05. Agricultural commodities for which export earnings are forecast to fall in 2005/06 include wheat, wool, beef and dairy products. EUROPE

0ne of Lithuania's biggest dairy companies, Pieno Zvaigzdes, is counting on a blend of tradition and high-tech to help make it a major player in the EU, which the Baltic state joined in 2004. In the past three years, Pieno Zvaigzdes has invested €50 million installing new technology in its four factories around Lithuania. The emphasis on high-tech is aimed at producing quality product for export.

Turkey
Agriculture key issue for EU entry
It is expected that the toughest discussion between the European Union (EU) and Turkey during the negotiations for Turkey’s entry to the EU will be around the agriculture sector. It is widely known that there will be serious issues when integrating Turkish agriculture with the highly protected and supported EU agriculture guidelines. Nevertheless, it is also estimated that the EU can benefit from Turkey’s agricultural production. NORTH ASIA
China
ASEAN produce exports boom
China’s imports of fruits and vegetables from Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries rose 41% over 2004, an increase credited to last year’s launch of the China–ASEAN early harvest programme (EHP). China’s ASEAN agricultural exports actually fell 9.8% over the year, to US$2.12 billion in 2004, while ASEAN imports hit $3.72 billion. The gap would likely be made up by July or August this year. Under EHP, China first agreed to allow ASEAN members to taste ‘early harvest’ by reducing tariffs on some 560 agricultural imports from ASEAN from the beginning of last year. Tariffs on all 560 items would be removed by 2006.

Nearly 100 registrants participated in the fourth DISCOVER Conference on Food Animal Agriculture September 10 - 13, 2000 at Abe Martin Lodge near Nashville, Indiana. "Probiotics for Food Animals" focused on the use of probiotics, or direct fed microbials, to improve various aspects of growth and performance of livestock and poultry as well as control of undesirable microorganisms that might enter the food supply from animal sources.
While other conferences have addressed probiotics and human nutrition, this conference was unique in focusing on probiotic use in livestock. In-depth discussions among participants and speakers during and after conference sessions allowed all to gain a better understanding of factors that can result in the successful uses of probiotics in the food animal industry. Various species of microorganisms along with their potential benefits and applications were discussed.

We live in a world gone quite mad. Organic growing systems are an attempt to infuse some sanity into this imbalanced situation. Veganic food systems aim to encourage further innovation. A vegan is one who chooses a diet and lifestyle free of animal products, and who does not support businesses that exploit animals. No meat, fish, chicken, fowl, eggs, milk, cheese, ice cream, yogurt, gelatin, honey, whey, wool, silk, leather or other animal derivatives. Think of any aspect of life that uses animals and the vegan is seeking a way to avoid that exploitation. Some do so for health reasons, others due to concerns over the environment, while still others ponder how our inhumanity to animals affects us spiritually and emotionally. There are vegans for social justice reasons and also to equalize global resource allocation. Organic agriculture was the norm from the beginning of time until World War II, when "The Green Revolution" ushered in the era of chemical fertilizers. Modern organics has been identified as "alternative", something done by "hippies." And yet, our grandparents recognize these concepts as traditional, albeit now with the benefits of scientific research to support them. Veganic agriculture is a growing body of knowledge and gardening practice which seeks to replace all the animal inputs which currently exist. In compost, the Vegan, who eats no eggs, would add no egg shells. Similarly Veganic gardening avoids the use of blood and bone meal, and manures because of their origins. Veganic gardeners are finding increasing success using no manures.

    IMPROVING ANIMAL AGRICULTURE THROUGH BIOTECHNOLOGY
    By Terry D. Etherton
    Distinguished Professor of Animal Nutrition
The Pennsylvania State University Livestock feed derived from biotechnology has been shown to increase production efficiency, decrease animal waste and lower the toxins that can cause sickness in animals, asserts Terry Etherton, distinguished professor at The Pennsylvania State University. Genetically modified feed also can improve water and soil quality by reducing levels of phosphorous and nitrogen in animal waste.
    INTRODUCTION
Over the past 20 years, biotechnology has lead to the development of new processes and products that have benefited agriculture and society. Between 1996 and 2002 there was a 35-fold increase in acreage planted globally with genetically modified (GM) crops, from 1.7 to 58.1 million hectares, and more than a quarter of GM crops are grown in developing countries. While there has been considerable discussion about the benefits of GM crops in the grains and fruits humans consume, less public debate has been forthcoming about GM crops' profound effects on improving the health of livestock grown for meat products and on reducing some of the environmental costs of livestock wastes. Adoption of products produced by modern biotechnology will be important to enable the production of food sufficient to feed a growing world population.

      1. The Context: Trends in Animal Agriculture in Developing Countries
Human population growth, increasing urbanisation and rising incomes are fuelling a massive increase in demand for food of animal origin (milk, meat, eggs) in developing countries. Globally, livestock production is growing faster than any other sector, and by 2020 the livestock sector is predicted to become the most important agricultural sector in terms of added value. In view of its substantial dynamics, this process has been referred to as the 'livestock revolution'. Important features of this process are:
        (1) a rapid and massive increase in consumption of livestock products in developing countries with, e.g. per caput meat consumption in the developing world expected to double between 1993 and 2020,
        (2) a shift of livestock production from temperate and dry areas to warmer and more humid environments

    Spatial Relationships of Polluted Streams,
    Animal Agriculture and Human Populations
    in South Carolina Watersheds
Jeffery Allen - Director, South Carolina Water Resources Center Kang Shou Lu - Research Associate, Strom Thurmond Institute Much has been written recently in the popular press about agriculture and its negative or harmful affects on the environment. Problems in North Carolina associated with confined pork production facilities and degradation of streams adjacent to these facilities seems to have affected the perception of agriculture across the Southeast if not the entire nation. The Clinton Administration's 1998 Clean Water Initiative and recent South Carolina law requires revision and increased enforcement of effluent guidelines and rules for all animal feeding operations, in part because of the perception that these operations contribute significantly to non-point source pollution. Because of these and numerous other reasons, the authors wished to determine if animal feeding operations contribute significantly to the non-point source pollution problem in South Carolina. This component of the overall agricultural perceptions study attempted to determine whether or not spatial relationships existed between areas of the state where large numbers of agricultural animals are concentrated and water quality by watersheds. The authors also examined the human population in the same context. The study area was limited primarily to the state of South Carolina, though some of the watersheds analyzed crossed political boundaries into North Carolina and Georgia.
