Animal Agriculture
Pork Production:
Despite the fact that pigs are highly intelligent and very curious beings, the industry intensively confines them indoors to small pens with concrete floors and metal bars. Without natural stimulation, and under such crowded conditions, pigs often resort to tail biting, which can result in serious injury or infection. The industry has responded to this problem by removing piglets' tailswithout anesthesia. Other unanesthetized mutilations commonly endured by the young piglets include castration and ear notching (for identification purposes). image courtesy of Farm Sanctuary image courtesy of PETA Pigs are transported to slaughter under overcrowded conditions because it is economically advantageous to transport as many animals per load as possible. For any journey less than 28 hours, they are given no food or water. The welfare of the animals is greatly compromised during this time, as is made manifest by the common “dead-on-arrivals.” At the slaughterhouse, pigs are hung upside-down by one or both back legs, their throats are cut, and they are bled to death. The Humane Slaughter Act
Dairy and Veal Production:
The bodies of modern dairy cows are heavily taxed. In addition to being forced to bear calves regularly, selective breeding and the use of hormones (such as BGH) to produce as much milk per cow as possible have deleterious health effects. Lameness and mastitis, an udder ailment, are both very common. With a plentiful supply of young cows to replace those with declining levels of milk production, cows are routinely slaughtered for inexpensive ground beef. In fact, although healthy cows can live for 20 to 25 years, our modern dairy cows typically are slaughtered after only a few years.

Certain fibre crops yield seeds used for sowing and for processing into oil and cake, and these are listed with oil-bearing crops and derived products in Chapter
FIBRES OF ANIMAL ORIGIN have many of the same uses as vegetal fibres, but are of much higher value. Both fine and coarse hair of animal origin are included in this group.
The FAO list includes 14 items of which seven are primary products. These are listed immediately following the vegetal fibres.

Winter 1995 (v7n1) Agricultural Animals and California's Water by Lyra Halprin , SAREP [Editor's Note: This is the first part of a two-part article on the Oct. 20, 1994 conference "Animal Agriculture Impacts on Water Quality in California, which reported the results of a year-long study or the same name undertaken by the UC Davis Animal Agriculture Research Center and the UC Agricultural Issues Center (AIC). Proceedings Mil be available from AIC in January 1995.] Keynote speaker Paul Johnson , chief of the USDA's Natural Resource Conservation Service (formerly the Soil Conservation Service), noted that because 75 percent of the land in the U.S. is private, water conservation must begin with those who live there. He said partnerships and coordinated research with state and federal agencies, the University of California, Cooperative Extension and the farm press will be necessary to protect water. A former farmer and a member of the Iowa House of Representatives, Johnson was instrumental in the passage of the Iowa Groundwater Protection Act of 1987, which emphasizes research, education and voluntary approaches to water quality. Barbara Schneeman , dean of UCD's College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, noted that California's productive animal agriculture industry understandably generates a large quantity of by-products. "These aren't necessarily always negative, but they need to be dealt with," she said, referring to the 500 million tons of manure produced daily by the state's more than 300 million animals.

Sustainable Animal Production - Visions for the 21th century Welcome to our Website
Sustainable animal production is a system which preserves the basis of life of future generations. The foundations, conditions and perspectives for animal production are exceedingly variable in different parts of the world. This project focusses on the future supply and quality of food for humans and animals, animal welfare and health, the effects of animal production on the environment, the influences of new technologies, future animal production sites and global trade. These pages contain the Conference Sustainable Animal Production , the documentation of a multidisciplinary project to develop a global vision for the future of the production of food of animal origin. This site is also intended as a forum to continue the dialogue begun in the virtual conference and workshop series "Sustainable Animal Production". The project was realized by a consortium of scientists from four research institutions in northern Germany and includes a virtual conference launched in October, 1999, and followed by a series of

U. S. ANIMAL AGRICULTURE CLAIMS 10 BILLION VICTIMS IN 2003 The total number of mammals and birds raised and killed for food in the U.S. this year is expected to exceed 10 billion for the first time in U.S. history, according to extrapolation of data from USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). This is a 0.7% increase over the 2002 figure of 9,997 million. The number of fishes and other aquatic organisms killed for human and animal food is not reported and is likely to exceed that number. The 2003 total of 10,064 million includes 41.2 million cattle and calves (up 0.5% from 2002), 133 million pigs (up 13%), 4.1 million sheep (unchanged), 291 million turkeys (down 5.2%), and 25.5 million ducks (unchanged), 9,144 million "broilers" (up 0.7%) and 425 million laying hens (up 0.2%). The 10 billion total reflects both the 847 million animals reported by the NASS as slaughtered in 2002 and another 847 million, or 8.5% of the total, who suffered lingering deaths from disease, malnutrition, injury, suffocation, stress, extermination, or other deadly factory farming practices, and never reached the slaughterhouse. Some of these "other" deaths were reported by the NASS, but most had to be derived from secondary sources, such as hatchery reports and interviews with agricultural experts. Examples of deaths not reported include broiler chickens and turkeys who die before they are placed in a farm, male chicks suffocated at birth, discarded layer hens, and piglets who die before weaning.
