About Cleburne County
The County Seat of Cleburne County, Heflin, is strategically located 73 miles from Birmingham, Alabama and 71 miles from Atlanta, GA. It's also only 110 miles to Montgomery, AL and 120 miles to Chattanooga, TN Our proximity to Interstate 20 provides ideal access to the major East/West transportation route in the Southeast. The Georgia-Pacific Railroad was completed to Heflin, Alabama from Atlanta, Georgia in 1882 and this contributed greatly to Heflin's growth. The town prospered and was incorporated in 1886. N.J. Ross, one of Heflin's early pioneers, also prospered and he matched his prosperity with generosity, giving the land for schools, churches, and cemeteries in the area now within the corporate limits of the City of Heflin, Alabama. The main street of the City is named in his honor.

  • We are pleased to announce that three new faculty members have joined the department this fall. David Lewis (Ph.D., Oregon State) is teaching in the environmental and resource economics field, with a specialty in spatial modeling. Laura Schechter (Ph.D., UC Berkeley) is teaching in the international development field, with a specialty in issues of trust and risk, as well as experimental methods. Guanming Shi (also a Berkeley Ph.D.) works on intellectual property rights issues, with a specialty in agricultural biotechnology. We have also added a fourth faculty member this year, when Brian Gould , a long-time contributor to AAE as a senior research scientist, was promoted to associate professor with tenure. He will continue to work in the area of applied demand analysis with an added emphasis on changing regulatory and international trade policy issues. This fall we are also welcoming Thi Minh Ngo (Ph.D., London School of Economics) as a research scientist on a two-year appointment. Thi Minh works on land reform, redistributive policies, and poverty alleviation in Vietnam. 2005 is likely to be remembered as a year of major change and renewal in AAE, with the addition of five top-caliber economists whose interests span the globe and whose economics skills extend our methodological expertise into several pathbreaking areas.

From the Department Head
Agriculture in today's world is a business, whether it be processing and marketing agricultural products, farming, or supplying agricultural inputs. Consumers face a variety of choices that are impacted by policies and regulations, by micro and macro conditions affecting them, and by their individual circumstances and welfare. The Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics addresses important issues regarding the management of agricultural and related businesses, the functioning of agricultural markets, the protection and use of resources, the performance of government policies affecting agricultural and related industries, and the impacts of decisions made by consumers with respect to the purchase of food and fiber products. ARE offers undergraduate major and minor programs in agricultural business management and a concentration in biological sciences business management within the agricultural business management program. At the graduate level, the department offers a Master of Science degree in agricultural economics, and a Ph.D. degree in economics. These instructional programs are enriched by faculty members with extension and research activities which contribute to the relevance and thoroughness of the teaching program.
