Grid Computing is, according to the Grid Information Centre a way to "...enable the sharing, selection, and aggregation of a wide variety of geographically distributed computational resources." It is, in other words, an attempt to make Sun's famous pronouncement "The Network Is The Computer" an even more workable proposition. (It is also an instantiation of several of the patterns of decentralization that used to travel together under the name peer-to-peer.) Despite the potential generality of the Grid, most of the public pronouncements are focusing on the use of Grids for supercomputing. IBM defines it more narrowly: Grid Computing is "... applying resources from many computers in a network-at the same time-to a single problem" , and the MIT Technology Review equated Grid technology with supercomputing on tap when it named Grids one of " Ten Technologies That Will Change the World This view is wrong. Supercomputing on tap won't live up to to this change-the-world billing, because computation isn't a terribly important part of what people do with computers. This is a lesson we learned with PCs, and it looks like we will be relearning it with Grids.

Extractions: In 1905, Albert Einstein published his famous Special Theory of Relativity and overthrew commonsense assumptions about space and time. Relative to the observer, both are altered near the speed of light: distances appear to stretch; clocks tick more slowly. A decade and a year later, Einstein further challenged conventional wisdom by describing gravity as the warping of spacetime, not a force acting at a distance. Since then, Einstein's revolutionary insights have largely stood the test of time. One by one, his predictions have been borne out by experiment and observation. But it wasn't until much later that scientists accepted one of the most dramatic ramifications of Einstein's theory of gravitation: the existence of black holes from whose extreme gravity nothing, not even light, can escape. Major advances in computation are only now enabling scientists to simulate how black holes form, evolve, and interact. They're betting on powerful instruments now under construction to confirm that these exotic objects actually exist. You might like to take a two-minute video tour of this exhibit's contents. If you have two or more old DOS machines, the cost can probably be kept under $10. The machines don't need a lot of memory or even a hard drive, but they must have a working parallel port. The platform for the cluster is UBASIC 8.8F, which is an ultra-precision high speed language written entirely in assembly language and downloadable for free. I prefer FreeDOS as the operating system as UBASIC runs significantly faster on it than it does on MS-DOS. Features Communication is a full 8 bits wide with 100% handshaking. Everything fits on one floppy with plenty of room to spare.

While looking at the results in a numerical form can provide insights, the quantity of numbers produced by some high performance computer simulations can make this task impractical. One alternative is to convert the numbers into pictures and animations, because human beings are inherently far better at understanding information in these forms. A researcher who, for example, is using finite difference methods on a supercomputer to model thermal convection in the Earth's mantel, can use computer graphics on a workstation to visualize the resulting temperatures consisting of millions, perhaps billions, of values. Using a program on the workstation, data for each time step is represented as a grid of pixels on the screen with the pixel colors representing temperature. These grids can then be displayed in succession to show the evolution of the model over time. In the case of a 3-dimensional model, more advanced techniques, such as volumetric rendering, can be used to visualize the data.
