Extractions: 1999-09-22: Update for an influx of Slashdot readers ... Hey, this document is 5 years old! Despite this, Oracle's patent policy statement is still very well written, and worth reading. I could be wrong, but I seem to remember hearing one of the founders of Oracle was responsible for getting the company to issue this statement, but after he died the lawyers moved to have the policy reversed. Although, it has been a long time, and it is possible I am confusing Oracle with some other company. I have also heard the argument that companies are loath to make such statements, since doing so has the potential to be used against them in court, making it harder to defend or assert their patents. I don't know whether this is really true, or was just an argument used by pro-patent lawyers to prevent more companies adopting such statements. For more historical software patent info and statements from a variety of companies please see my Software patent page . This was part of a failed attempt to get Silicon Valley to defeat the whole software patent nonsense. I've now concluded the chances of getting software patents defeated in the current political/corporate climate are slim, and focus my activism elsewhere where I expect the greatest payoff. Insert blurb from current political soapbox: Current estimates are 34 million people in Africa have been infected by HIV/AIDS. 12 million of them have already died. The numbers are only going to rise. The numbers are already staggering.
