Before Sibelius enrolled at the Music Institute (autumn 1885), he included a piano in nearly all the chamber music works he wrote for at least three musicians. In 1881 Sibelius and his siblings had formed a trio in which Linda played the piano, Christian the cello and Janne the violin. Their mother played the harmonium with the children. "We played together; Janne played the violin, Kitti the cello, mother the piano or the harmonium. Janne composed for piano and violin at a fairly early age, and I had to accompany him from the notes he had written down, which was not easy," Linda Sibelius later recollected. In 1882 there was a rapid increase in the musicians who took part. At the beginning of the summer Sibelius wrote to his Uncle Pehr that he was playing Kayser's études and duets with Anna Tigerstedt, the daughter of Theodor Tigerstedt, the municipal Officer of Health. In the autumn of 1882 Sibelius joined a string quartet whose repertoire included quartets by Haydn.

Extractions: 29 October 2004 Tackling a work like Sibelius' Violin Concerto is like climbing a mountain which gets a little higher with every generation, as new benchmark recordings appear. Violinist Henning Kraggerud with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and fellow Norwegian conductor Bjarte Engeset make it safely to the top, but leave the mountain pretty much as they found it. However, the balance between drive and meditation that this work needsis a delicate tightrope to walk, and if Kraggerud manages to avoid the doldrums of a performance which is excessively beautiful (think Julian Rachlin), he never quite matches the intensity of, say, Mutter's account. He tends towards the dreamy and refined, which works well enough (especially in the slow movement) but falls short of the demonic energy the concerto demands. Although less polite, his final movement still isn't the "danse macabre" which Sibelius once described. Where Kraggerud and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra truly shine is in Sibelius' one-movement G minor Serenade, here given a wonderfully shaped performance by both orchestra and soloist, seemingly more suited to the Serenade's lighter sense of introspection and yearning.
