Extractions: Jump to: navigation search Christian Sinding Christian August Sinding January 11 December 3 ) was a Norwegian composer and the brother of the painter Otto Sinding and the sculptor Stephan Sinding He was born in Kongsberg and studied music first in Oslo before going to Germany , where he studied at the conservatory in Leipzig under Salomon Jadassohn . He lived in Germany for much of his life, but received regular grants from the Norwegian government. In 1920â he went to the United States of America to teach composition for a season at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York . In 1924 he was given Henrik Wergeland âs Oslo home, " Grotten " ("The grotto"), as an honorary residence. He died in Oslo. The large number of short, lyrical piano pieces and songs that Sinding wrote has led to many seeing him as the heir to his fellow countryman, Edvard Grieg , not so much in musical style but as a Norwegian composer with an international reputation. After his first piano sonata was premiered, a critic complained that it was "too Norwegian". Sinding replied that the next one would be even more so. Nachdem Salom Jadossen ihm 1877 ins Jahreszeugnis schreibt, dass er nur ein geringes musikalisches Talent hat, unterbricht Sinding das Studium und spielt in Oslo in einem Orchester unter der Leitung von Grieg und Svendsen. In der Zeit f¤ngt Sinding an sich mehr und mehr f¼r das Komponieren zu interessieren. 1879 kehrt er nach Leipzig zur¼ck und nimmt Kompositionsunterricht bei Carl Reinecke. Noch im gleichen Jahr werden in Leipzig eine Violinsonate und in Oslo ein Sonatensatz f¼r das Klavier aufgef¼hrt. Diese wie auch die meisten der fr¼hen Kompositionen hat er sp¤ter vernichtet.

First: many of the tunes are by Tveitt or belong to the Tveitt family. That said, every one of them is drenched in authentic Hardanger feeling; the first suite consists of fifteen tunes creating miniature tone pictures which are unconnected but the fourth suite tells the tale of a wedding from wooing to a bridal voyage in a boat across a fjord to the raucous (and often obscene if we could have the words) post-wedding celebration (one segment is titled "Drunken Talk - Homage to Atonality"). The orchestration is very varied and extremely colorful; sure to appeal to lovers of Bartók and Kodály and Vaughan Williams. Royal Scottish National Orchestra; Bjarte Engeset. Naxos 8.555078 (New Zealand) ERNST TOCH (1887-1964): String Quartet No. 11, Op. 34, String Quartet No. 13, Op. 74. Toch wrote 13 quartets but the first five were those of a teenager self-teaching through reading Mozart quartet scores and those are lost anyway. The eleventh dates from 1924 and was commissioned by Hindemith for the Donaueschingen Chamber Music Festival; it is a very pleasing, serious but not heavy neo-classical work in a free tonal idiom. Its discmate dates from thirty years later and is Toch's only work in twelve-tone form - an accident really since he discovered that his chosen theme was almost dodecaphonic and decided to follow through with it in a very un-Schoenbergian way in what is identifiably his own voice. Extractions: Went to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts this afternoon with my sister and her family to appreciate art from ages past. I went to the special exhibit of Nordic Landscape artists while the two boys went with their parents on a Scavenger Hunt throughout the rest of the HUGE musuem. Not as big as British Museum but they DID see an Egyptian mummy. The following are the Norwegian artists I saw though there were many more Danish, Swedish, Icelandic and Finnish artists.
