France ) was the most famous composer of the Franco-Flemish School in the last half of the 15th century, and is often considered the most influential composer between Dufay and Josquin des Prez . In addition to being a renowned composer, he was also an honored singer, choirmaster, and teacher. The spelling of Ockeghem's name comes from a supposed autograph of his which survived as late as 1885, and as reported by E. Giraudet, a historian in Tours; the document has since been lost. In 15th century sources, the spelling "Okeghem" predominates. The birthdate of Ockeghem is controversial, and dates as early as 1410, and as late as 1430 have been proposed. The earlier date is based on the possibility that he knew Binchois in Hainaut before the older composer moved from Mons to Lille in 1423 . Ockeghem would have to have been younger than 15 at the time. This particular speculation derives from Ockeghem's reference, in the lament he wrote on the death of Binchois in 1460, to a chanson by Binchois dated to that time.

The closest assumed image of the composer is the manuscript painting where he appears as a figure wearing dark glasses (obtainable at that time only from Italy) and a heavy hood [1]. There has been an attempt by Lowinsky to suggest that Ockeghem might be the handsome figure in the red gown [2]. However the major position of the figure wearing glasses occupies in the painting as well as its facial features which are different than the "standard" face of the other singers seem to suggest it, and not the figure in the red gown, is the figure of Ockeghem. 2. Ockeghem was a native of Saint Ghislain in Hainaut [3]. The birth date for Ockeghem ranges from 1425 to as early as 1410. It seems that a date nearer to 1425 should be preferred in order not to have to explain how the composer was unknown by any piece before the age of 45 [4].

Long ago FÈtis thought he was born around 1430, assuming that he was a choirboy in Antwerp in 1443; Plamenac suggested 1425, then later agreed with Riemann and Van den Borren, who picked 1420; Leeman Perkins wrote in 1980 that he must have been born closer to 1410, since he was thought to have lived about 90 or 100 years. It is unknown where got his training as a musician. Lack of any documentary evidence is only compensated for by two compositions in which Ockeghem refers to the composer Gilles de Binche (Binchois), for more than 30 years a distinguished member of the Burgundian court chapel of Duke Philip the Good. Shortly after Binchois' death in 1460, Ockeghem composed a lament whose text suggests personal acquaintance with Binchois. Presumably earlier is Ockeghem's polyphonic mass setting based on the Tenor of one of Binchois' most famous chansons: De plus en plus se renouvelle.
