Extractions: Lish Ouzel The Dodge A Wing - Glyph Dipper Recept Cae - Mosaic Covert Sloots Ariation BUY ONLINE Recorded in Oakland, CA, June 20, 2002. Guerrilla Mosaics is a sax-koto-percussion conversation with results as unexpected as would be expected from these players. Butcher introduces his vocabulary of multiphonics, high frequencies and unique articulations to Masaokas koto and laser-triggered koto; Robair ranges over the course of the disc from barely audible texturing to explosive full drum-kit. The players work both with and against the cultural resonaces of their instruments, often subverting common modes of interaction. This is recognizably strings, wind and percussion, but with the enjoyable element of a first encounter, where no-one feels they already knows what it should sound like. Working in a format without established precedent, this trio of all-star free improvisers spontaneously creates a unique sonic environment that challenges the traditional roles and sounds of their instruments. "There is no other recording that sounds like this," says Robair, an active performer, music journalist, and founder of the San Francisco Bay Area label, Rastascan. "The battle is of three musicians trying to create an overall sound where you cant really tell what the different instruments are. John avoids sounding like a saxophone as much as possible and I avoid sounding like a drummer as much as possible. Miyas MIDI triggering laser koto doubles and triples the things shes able to do."

Extractions: "An important contender in the international network of multimedia experimental festivals." Los Angeles Times The genre-defying annual festival from the CalArts Center for Experiments in Art, Information and Technology offers three evenings of new improvised music and multimedia. Opening the fest is Miya Masaoka, the Alpert Award-winning composer, sound artist and koto player whose trailblazing work incorporates natural sources such as the sounds and movements of insects, plant physiology, human brainwaves, and the bodies of exotic dancers. This year¹s fest also brings programs from the Sicilian composer and improviser Domenico Sciajno, whose practice generates and modifies sounds through visual parameters and processes; and Tokyo-based sound artist Toshi Nakamura, who uses his signature ³no-input mixing board² to weave delicate webs of feedback tones and "accidental" sonic textures. Each artist will perform a solo set, and then a second set with Los Angeles-based improvisers Hans W. Koch (25 Jan.), David Rothbaum (26 Jan.) and Lewis Keller and Carole Kim (27 Jan.).

As a sound designer, multimedia artist, and sculptor, I am very interested in creating unique works of art that enable users to achieve entrainment states. I am particularly enthusiastic in designing interactive musical instruments that do not require the user to traverse through a period of learning. For example, a musical instrument that is played simply by moving ones hands across a pool of water. Not only does this enable new users to immediately get in the zone with the music, but it also opens the instrument up to children, and people that are not able to play an instrument, because of some physical or mental disability. At the same time, I am interested in creating the tools for users to be able to transform the terms (or state) of their consciousness. A water touchscreen designed by Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories. The triangular shapes swarm about in response to movements of your hands in the water. The shapes behave very much like a school of fish.

Since their invention at Bell Labs in 1958, they've been used to perform eye surgery, target smart bombs and carry zillions of bytes of data along fiber-optic cables. Nonetheless, it took decades for someone to figure out that these highly focused beams of light could replace the strings on a 1,300-year-old Japanese zither. Miya Masaoka is a composer, koto player and inventor of the Laser Koto a tripod-mounted laser array that she plays by passing her hands through the beams, triggering a variety of sampled and processed sounds from her G4 PowerBook. Each flick of the wrist and twitch of the finger is interpreted as a stroke on the instrument's virtual strings.
