Später erhielt er Unterricht an Johann Buwas berühmter Klavierschule, wo er sich zu einem virtuosen Pianisten entwickelte. Zugleich brachte er sich selbst das Cello- und Geigespielen bei. Während seiner Gymnasialzeit begann er zu komponieren, indem er aus vorhandenen Themen Klavierstücke und kleinere Werke für Trio- und Quartettbesetzung arrangierte und diese mit Freunden in Wirtshäusern aufführte. Er studierte auf Wunsch seines Vaters Rechtswissenschaft , wechselte jedoch bald zu Philosophie und Kunstgeschichte . Dies führte schließlich zu einem Bruch mit seiner Familie, doch Marx hatte weiterhin großes Interesse an der Musik, so dass er im Alter von 26 Jahren seine Kompositionstätigkeit wieder aufnahm und innerhalb von vier Jahren (1908-12) ungefähr 120 seiner rund 150 Lieder schrieb. Nachdem er den Doktortitel der Philosophie erworben hatte, nahm er den Posten des Professors für Theorie an der Musikakademie der Universität Wien an.

Someday I will have that. It's my dream,” he said. After winning their first match, Special Olympics Austria lost a tight contest to Special Olympics China.
