Extractions: Composer Index Guillaume de Machaut (d.1377) is one of the undisputed pinnacle geniuses of Western music, and the most famous composer of the Middle Ages. Today his four-voice Mass of Notre Dame . The remainder of the fourteenth century was an epic of wars and plagues, and one of the few periods in which the population of Europe declined, but Machaut's reputation continued to rise. He went on to serve two kings of France, and was charged with a task as important as accompanying hostages during the English war. In 1361 the Dauphine was received in Machaut's quarters, an exceptional event. By the 1370s Machaut's name was associated with Pierre de Lusignan, King of Cyprus, thus establishing his fame nearly as far as Asia. Machaut is frequently portrayed today as an avant garde virelais and especially the lengthy lais . He also acted decisively to refine the emerging polyphonic song forms ballade rondeau , and these were to become the dominant fixed forms for the following generations. What Machaut achieved so eloquently is an idiomatic and natural combination of words with music, forcefully compelling in its lyrical grace and rhythmic sophistication. His songs are immediately enjoyable, because he was able to shape the smallest melodic nuances as well as to conceive of forms on a large scale. Extractions: The fourteenth century was, as the historian Barbara Tuchman notes, a calamitous century. Europe was ravaged by plague, which killed up to one-third of the population in a three-year period. France and England embarked on the disastrous Hundred Years' War (1328–1450) which inflicted great misery on the French people. On top of this, political conflicts resulted first in the relocation of the papacy from Rome to Avignon in southern France (1309) and ultimately in the election of competing popes (at one point, numbering three) resulting in the Great Schism (1378–1417). Ironically, this was also a time of great achievement in music. A new class of highly trained composers continued the polyphonic traditions of the previous century and added new approaches to rhythm and structure. Among these composers of the so-called Ars nova (literally "new art") was Guillaume de Machaut. Machaut lived his life in the higher ranks of service, first as secretary to John of Luxembourg, King of Bohemia, and then as a canon (a church official) at the Cathedral of Rheims. Like many in the fourteenth century, Machaut's life and works reflect an equal measure of the sacred and secular. Most of his works were either secular (such as his many chansons) or a mix of sacred and ceremonial (including many of his motets and his hocket "David," which was probably written for the coronation service of King Charles V in 1364). Extractions: We have no precise knowledge of Guillaume de Machaut's early years. He was probably born around 1300 in the diocese of Rheims in Champagne and he may have spent some time studying in Paris where, since the 13th century, the most sophisticated musical theories had been elaborated. A papal bull of Benedict XII dated 1335 states that for about twelve years Guillaume had been the almoner ( clericus elimosinarius ), secretary and familiar of John of Luxembourg, King of Bohemia whom he accompanied on his expeditions throughout Europe. This great feudal lord, King of Bohemia and stalwart and inalienable ally of the royal house of France, travelled the length and breadth of Europe in pursuit of his various military and political campaigns, and his secretary followed faithfully at his side throughout these often turbulent peregrinations. In Machaut's case, the poet ultimately takes precedence over the musician.

If he can be called a trouvère, his life followed a quite different pattern from most trouvères. Like Machaut, they benefited from highly placed patronage, but none had the important position within the church hierarchy that Machaut enjoyed at Reims. Machaut had a professional status most of them never attained, and he moved with equal ease in sacred and secular spheres. What especially characterizes Machaut and sets him off from earlier traditions is that he was one of the first writers to whom the words "poet" or "author" in the modern sense could be applied. Machauts works may be divided into the categories he establishes with one exception in his manuscripts: narrative verse, lyric poetry, and musical compositions. Music is usually in its own section in the manuscript, and notated pieces normally appear only there. For example, a lyric poem may be found without music in the lyric poetry section, but if it is to have music, it recurs with its music in the music section.
