Extractions: The every-day implications of sound: Didjeridus and a sonogram of Ruth Andersonâs jugular. While many of her colleagues have started composing âtracksâ and âalbumsâ, Annea Lockwood still thinks in âworksâ and âconceptsâ. Even though her CD-output is sizeable, most of it has remained a transfer from the physical world to an abstract medium. This has not been without merrit, as Lockwood eagerly points out herself in reference to âFloating Worldâ: âEach of these recordings captures a truly transitory series of moments (...) fixing them digitally, but temporarily. When played, they become transitory once more (...) â a paradox I like very much.â On the disc at hand, two of her pieces face each other with a distance of almost ten years â what else do they tell us about her as a composer? âThousand Year Dreamingâ dates back to 1990 and consists of five closely connected movements for a large group of performers within an extremely specific timbral range. More than anything, it is a work about resonance and sonorities rooted in improvisation: After a live performance with percussionist N. Scott Robinson and Art Baron, a lively discussion ensued about the creative success of their concert and the possibility of combining several didjeridus with the sounds of trumpets, trombines, oboes, clarinets, a frame drum and several other percussive instruments.

Extractions: Soundscape Composition and the Subversion of Electroacoustic Norms by Andra McCartney fields of SOUND The field of electroacoustic presents a number of potential challenges to assumptions about what Western art music is: as John Cage noted as early as 1937, it opens up the entire field of sound as musical sources. Barry Truax states that "the serious use of environmental sound in music is potentially disruptive and even subversive to the established norms of the artistic field" (1995: 1). Electroacoustic music can shift attention from pitch relationships to timbral possibilities of sounds. As a result, much electroacoustic music confounds traditional forms of musical analysis (Tenney 1986: 4). Soundscape composition, with its focus on environmental sound, could be considered a type of electroacoustic music that is particularly resistant to traditional analysis and categorization. The serious use of environmental sound The concept of an environment of sound is the basis of the word "soundscape," a term credited to composer R. Murray Schafer. He defines it as:
Extractions: Aboriginal didgeridoos, 'conch shells' (shells belonging to Hindu musical tradition, often played during religious ceremonies), 'waterphones' (water instruments, used in ambient music and derived from Tibetan musical instruments), and (but not only) 'pod rattles' (percussion instruments from Zimbabwe). All of this, together with more classic instruments (trombone, oboe) and some unusual ones (clarinet-contrabass), was skillfully organized in 'Thousand Year Dreaming' and 'Floating World' to articulate the varied frame of this improvisational ensemble, centered around Annea Lockwood's strong personality. Hypnotic sequences, rarefied and full of mysticism, dream-like atmospheres and breaths. When the contemporary nature of sounds is mixed with ancient energies, the results can be very interesting: it's enough to shy away from new age excesses and pretentious spiritualities.
