Extractions: Annea Lockwood OO #59 is the re-issue of the seminal work of Annea Lockwood and a record of her early explorations of natural and found sounds. The Glass World originated in 1966 as a live, two hour performance work entitled, The Glass Concert , and was presented in over 70 concerts in England Scandinavia and Australasia, the final performance being at WBAI's Free Music Store in New York City in 1973. Many types, shapes and sizes of glass are used, singly or combined and are manipulated in a variety of ways so as to extract from them their latent sounds. The glass used has not been specifically prepared or shaped as with musical instruments; pieces of glass have been used which are not normally seen - fragments collected from factory floors, such as small glass discs which are rubbed together, and sea-green glass rocks which are knocked against each other; a thin glass rod is drawn across the edge of a large suspended pane, as a bow across a violin string; another pane, struck lightly like a gong is then raised and lowered in a water-filled tank, sending undulating reverberations through the glass and the water; the 'breathing machine' consists of two interlocking laboratory jars, one containing water and one air. Lockwood has been known for the last thirty years for her sensitive use of environmental and natural/found sounds that explore the music of the world around us. Out of print for many years, this recording documents her investigations into sounds drawn from glass. Using common objects and industrial castoffs, she unobtrusively allows them to sing their songs in an aesthetic with direct ties to post-Cageian art movements such as Fluxus.

Sinopah (XI, 1998), a split album with Ruth Anderson, contains Lockwood's 46-minute World Rhythms (1975), a live improvisation that broadcasts natural sounds, from volcanic eruptions to earthquakes to geysers to bonfires to waves to human breathing. The continuum thus spans the dimensions of the human experience.

Extractions: On October 3rd 2005, I finally realized Piano Transplant No. 4, Southern Exposure (Nos. 1, 2, and 3 being respectively Piano Burning Piano Drowning and Piano Garden ). I had thought this up in 1982, as an impossible project, for Sonorita Prospettiche , a show of such projects first presented in Rimini, Italy. Materials: a defunct concert-grand piano, an anchor and a heavy chain. Bolt the chain to the piano's back leg with strong bolts. Set the piano in the surf at the low tide line at Sunset Beach, near Santa Cruz, California. Chain the anchor to the piano leg. Open the piano lid. Leave the piano there until it vanishes. The piece remained unrealised. But then along came Jane Campion's great film The Piano , with its opening shot of a small grand sitting in the surf on the New Zealand coast. I thought, "Good. She's done it for me", but still had a hankering to do it myself. So when ruined-piano maestro Ross Bolleter and Tos Mahoney, director of the recent '7th Totally Huge New Music Festival' in Perth, Australia, invited me to do Piano Burning in the 'Ruined Piano Convergence' part of the festival, I agreed, if they could also rustle up a grand and a beach on the Indian Ocean.

Extractions: When Annea Lockwood was invited to teach at Hunter College in 1973, she had already acquired a degree of cult status as a musical original. Now, at 65, she is a renowned composer and a leader of the international progressive musical community. Lockwood, whose break with classical tradition began with the contemplation of common pebbles, has waged a gentle yet steady and determined campaign to showcase and amplify nature in all its glories, from the tiniest stones to the mightiest rivers and beyond. Along the way, Lockwood has become a force of nature in her own right. Born in New Zealand in 1939, Lockwood moved in 1961 to London, where she studied composition and piano at the Royal College of Music. In 1963-64, she did post-graduate work with Gottfried Michael
