He moved to Sweden at age 22 and died at the age of 36 on December 15 in Stockholm Kraus was born in the central German town of Miltenberg in Franconia , the son of a civil clerk Joseph Bernhard Kraus and Anna Dorothea née Schmidt. His father's family had a small restaurant in Weilbach near Amorbach , while his mother was a daughter of the master-builder Johann Martin Schmidt . Joseph had 13 brothers and sisters, but seven of them died during their childhood. After a short stay in Osterburken , the Kraus family moved to Buchen (Odenwald) (in Baden-Württemberg ) in 1761, where the father Joseph Bernhard Kraus found a position as a clerk. In Buchen Kraus started his earliest formal education. His first music teachers were rector Georg Pfister (1730-1807) and cantor Bernhard Franz Wendler (1702-1782), giving him mainly piano and violin lessons. K Joseph Martin Kraus is one of the few composers of the eighteenth century to have been considered by both Joseph Haydn and Christoph Willibald von Gluck to be an original genius. He was a talented composer, a prolific correspondent, and a published author who during his youth produced a volume of poetry, a tragedy (Tolon), and one of the few music aesthetical treatises that can be associated with the literary Sturm und Drang movement. The son of a regional civil servant, Kraus received his earliest education from the local schools in Buchen, a small town on the fringes of the Odenwald in central Germany. After two years of study there, he accepted a proposition to travel to Sweden in order to focus his career on music at the court of Gustav III. He spent two years of relative hardship attempting to break into the Stockholm musical establishment. A commission for an opera, Proserpin , whose text was drafted by the King himself, won him the post as Deputy Musical Director in 1781. The following year he was sent on a grand tour by Gustav in order to observe the latest trends in music theatre in continental Europe. Joseph Martin Kraus was born on June 20, 1756 in Miltenberg am Main in central Germany. His father was "Stadtschreiber" and held other positions in local administration as well; his maternal grandfather was an architect, and so Kraus' origins were not exactly humble. As a 12-year-old boy, Kraus went to Mannheim, one of the musical centers of that time, and was enrolled in the ‘Gymnasium' and ‘Musikseminar' of the Jesuits. In Mannheim, Kraus came into contact with some of the masters of the famous orchestra such as Cannabich and studied with some of them. In 1773-77, Kraus studied law and philosophy at different German universities. In Göttingen he made contact with a Swedish student, Carl Stridsberg, who encouraged Kraus to relocate to Stockholm, Sweden, where Kraus arrived in 1778. Kraus was a man of many talents and interests. In addition to music, he composed a tragedy (Tolon, 1776), a collection of poems (Versuch von Schäfergedichten, 1773), a musical pamphlet (Etwas von und über Musik fürs Jahr, 1777, "which is one of the few actual theoretical works devoted to the adaptation of ‘Sturm und Drang' literary philosophy to music"), and even started a Musical Dictionary. But his fame, of course, rests on his musical out-put.
