Mr. Kirchner, 87, is one of three living composers the society is focusing on in various programs this season. Skip to next paragraph Patrick Andrade for The New York Times Forum: Classical Music Even though the society’s concert on Sunday afternoon at Alice Tully Hall had only one short work by Mr. Kirchner, along with scores by Brahms, Webern and Korngold, the program was still, in a sense, focused on him. This was the second concert titled “Through Brahms: A Path from Schubert to Kirchner.” The idea, devised by the society’s new artistic directors, the cellist David Finckel and the pianist Wu Han, is to trace the evolution of styles and the network of influences that have produced a composer like Mr. Kirchner. If the concept seems intellectual on paper, its musical realization proved involving. Sunday’s program began with two late works of Brahms, a composer Mr. Kirchner reveres. The alluring performance of Brahms’s Sonata in E flat major for Clarinet and Piano, played by the clarinetist David Shifrin and the pianist Andre-Michel Schub, had a subtext: do not trust the ambling character and surface lyricism of this actually complex and harmonically disorienting music.
