Extractions: Its an enormous pleasure to find the Royal Festival Hall filled to capacity on a Sunday afternoon. Perhaps with artists of such quality as Chailly, Repin and the Concertgebouw billed, one should not be surprised, yet this was no easy-listening teatime programme. The curiously attractive music of Dutchman Keuris (Tristan Keuris, 1946 - 1996) began the concert. Three Preludes for Orchestra It would not be an overstatement to describe Vadim Repins account of Shostakovich s Violin Concerto No.1 in A minor Op 77/99 as some of the most outstanding live violin playing this reviewer has ever heard. His piercing, focused sound played with incredibly precise yet natural bow control - might have been too emotionally detached for some ears, but he captured exactly the intensity and struggle that Shostakovichs concerto demands. Within the outer tonal strength of Repins sound there was always a beautifully delicate vulnerability, encapsulated by his silky lyricism. Throughout, the Concertgebouw and Riccardo Chailly remained completely at one with the soloist, sympathetic to every nuance.

Extractions: Nederlands componist.

Extractions: 2003/04 SEASON ABOUT THE COMPOSERS > TRISTAN KEURIS Tristan Keuris "A composer should continuously lead the public astray. Music is not served by truth. Good music exists by the grace of cunning and deception." - Tristan Keuris Tristan Keuris was born on October 3, 1946 in Amersfoort and he died on December 15, 1996, in Amsterdam. From 1962 to 1969, he studied composition with Ton de Leeuw at the Utrecht Conservatory from the time he was fifteen, after first having studied with Jan van Vlijmen in his native city Amersfoort. For a short time, he also followed lessons in music theory at the Utrecht Conservatory with Joep Straesser. In 1969 he concluded his studies and was awarded the Prize for Composition. In addition to his activities as a composer, Keuris taught at the conservatories in Hilversum and Utrecht. Practically all of his works were commissioned. Keuris received international recognition with his symphonic works Sinfonia (1975) and Movements (1982) (the latter introduced in the United States by the Concertgebouw Orchestra). Since 1987 new compositions were published by Novello, London.

Extractions: One of the great advantages of the 21st century is the ease of electronic communication; Band-Chat recently put us all back in touch with Leroy Osmon down in Mexico, and the problem of identifying large-scale wind ensemble works, and this produced from Leroy a wonderful listing of pieces including 18 works by Leroy himself. As with any listing, it easy to quibble: why include Waltons Façade but not Schoenbergs Pierrot Lunaire , and why no sign of Weberns ensemble music, such as the Concerto for Nine Instruments , especially if the list includes the works of Varèse. For that matter, I would also include the Berg Kammerkonzert However, this is mere carping, since Leroys listing is pretty comprehensive, going up in scope as far as the Stravinsky Symphony of Wind Instruments and the two late Strauss works. I would add to these undoubted masterpieces several fine large-scale European works which I think are well worth programming. The new millennium was celebrated by Sir Simon Rattle and the Royal Festival Hall with the commission from Magnus Lindberg of his Gran Duo
