Extractions: Tristan Keuris (1946-1996) was born in Amersfoort, Holland. He studied composition with Ton de Leeuw at the Utrecht Conservatory, where he graduated with the Composition Prize. In 1975 Keuris wrote Sinfonia for orchestra, a work that firmly established him as a composer of international importance, winning the Matthijs Vermeulen Prize and subsequently receiving many performances world-wide. In 1982 he was honoured with the Cultural Award of Hilversum, in particular for Movements for Orchestra and the Piano Concerto. Important later commissions included Symphonic Transformations (1987) for the Houston Symphony Orchestra and Concerto for Saxophone Quartet (1986) which the Rascher Saxophone Quartet has performed all over the world. In 1995 he received a Koussevitzky Foundation award. Play (for clarinet and piano, 1968) Tristan Keuris specially likes the saxophone and has written many pieces for this instrument. Ed Bogaard (member of the Netherlands Saxophone Quartet) was very enthousiastic about this. Ed Bogaard however also played the clarinet in the sixties. To him (and Agnes Benoist) Keuris dedicated Play, a capricious composition with many details but without the metrical frame of bars. Pianotrio (for violin, cello and piano, 1984) In 1985 a whole Tristan Keuris Day was organized in Amsterdam, where many of his works from the past twenty years were performed. The pianotrio was first performed by the Mendelssohn Trio that day, but was hardly played since this trio separated. The quotations from critics : A work which bewitched the listener like a heap of evaporated passion / An organic whole with depth and a rich emotional content.
