News Events Profiles Story posted April 07, 2004 Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Aaron Jay Kernis, whose works will be performed on campus by the Contrasts Quartet this weekend , will discuss his music at 4 p.m. Friday, April 9, in the Tillotson Room (101) in Gibson Hall. "The Composer Speaks: A Lecture by Aaron Jay Kernis" is open to the public at no charge. For more information call 725-3747. Born January 15, 1960, Kernis is one of the youngest composers to win the Pulitzer Prize. According to the biography available on the Web site of his publisher Schirmer, Kernis "has become among the most esteemed musical figures of his generation. Each work of Kernis bears the unmistakable stamp of a wildly fertile musical imagination and a distinctive voice forged out of the wide-ranging musical languages of the 1980s and 1990s. His music bursts with rich poetic imagery, brilliant instrumental color,distinctive musical wit, and infectious exuberance."

Most obviously Concierto de Dance Hits and 100 Greatest Dance Hits but when titles like Too Hot Toccata and Salsa Pasada are added to the equation, its enough to suggest that Kernis is as firmly at home on the dance floor as in the concert hall. Kerniss orchestral showpiece New Era Dance was written in 1992 to celebrate, as the composer wrote, a new era of leadership at the New York Philharmonic and in anticipation of the new millennium to come in the year 2000, in hope for a time of imperative political and social change in this country. The piece is proudly New Yorkish, following a distinguished lineage of musical cityscapes inspired by Manhattans looming vistas from the likes of Edgard Varèse, George Gershwin, Steve Reich and Leonard Bernstein.
