Extractions: 5'2" photographs and negatives Alexander Leventon (1896-1950). Alexander Leventon was born in Rostov, Russia in 1896. He began study of the violin in 1902, and continued his education at the University of Moscow and the Imperial Conservatory in 1913, where he studied law and music. He served in the White Russian Army in 1918 and left Russia in 1921. When he arrived in the United States a year later, Leventon worked as a violinist with the New York Symphony. He moved to Rochester, New York in 1923, where he held the position of concertmaster with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra until 1944. While in Rochester, Leventon also worked as a professional photographer, achieving international recognition for his work. He was affiliated with the Rochester Philharmonic as a violinist through 1950, and his photographs of the orchestra's musicians appear in a number of concert programs. He died on October 10, 1950, in Rochester. The original negatives and photographs were given to Sibley Music Library by Gladys Leventon, wife of Alexander Leventon, in 1984. Copy prints and negatives were made from these originals in 1990 by Michael Hager of Rochester, New York.

This is a wonderfully passionate account that is playing on vinyl as I write. It eclipses any subsequent recordings including Christian Steiner (see footnote) shot of Hanson on the cover smoking a politically incorrect cigarette. CD jewel cases certainly killed the art of record sleeve design stone dead! Both symphonies are fine romantic works, but certainly not masterpieces. Today the Hanson is largely forgotten. But the Korngold is quite well known, and attracts the attention of conductors such as AndrÃ© Previn . Is the Korngold really that much better music, or is it just musical fashion?
